Kenny Dalglish is ready to put his reputation and job on the line by backing his under-fire Liverpool players to deliver next season.

Dalglish insists he and his team are hurting even more than the Anfield fans after five defeats in six Premier League matches.

But the Scot, who has led Liverpool to Carling Cup success and an FA Cup semi-final this season, *insists he has so much faith in his current squad that it will be difficult to find anyone who can *improve it in the summer transfer market.

“The pessimism is all about results in the league and we want to do better in the league,” said Dalglish.

“We have to accept the criticism that’s going to come our way if we aren’t winning league matches.

“But if it’s hurting *anybody, it’s not hurting them as much as it is *hurting the players and staff in here.

“The most important thing for us is to improve on this season and the *players expect that as well. If someone comes in, they have to be a lot better than what we’ve got and that is a huge challenge.

“I don’t think there are many people more *committed than the *players we have here. If we don’t find someone better than what we’ve got, we don’t get them. Simple and straightforward as that.”

Dalglish suggested it is a tough task for any club other than Manchester City to find better players, but that will be scant *consolation to Liverpool fans if they do not *compete in the league next season.

Today they face a Toon side growing in power and stature – and eight points ahead of them in the table. Most of Dalglish’s signings have yet to prove their worth but the defiant boss said: “Everything’s there for this group of players to be *winning matches.

“They need direction and we’re the ones that need to be giving them direction. But we cannot change our *principles *because that’s the way we’ve been brought up.

“We might tweak a few things but if you swapped the cup results to league games, we’d be *flying – maybe that would be more satisfactory to everybody else.

“We’ve put the first and second clubs in the League out of the domestic cups. We went on and won one and we’re in the semi of the other. The cups have been good to us.

“But we need to get *results in the league to take the pressure off. The players are determined to correct it and we want to see the club progress – and I think it has progressed. I am not saying it couldn’t be more successful, but I do think it has progressed.”

Dogleash has ruined every team he's ever managed. Why would anyone have thought it would be any different with Liverpool?

In all honesty, he was a naturally gifted player. He didn't have to think what to do, he just got on with it. It was a different kettle of fish when he took up management and that didn't come naturally to him. He had his share of luck but was found out to be lacking in lots of ways.

Good players don't always make good managers.

 

He destroyed us and that's all that matters for me. Ginola/Ferdinand/Beardsley out, Barnes and Rush in what a ****er!

It's strange, the way ex-players manage and the style they employ often reflects the way they played but Dogleash was different with us, he had us playing horrible uninspired football.

 

Unfortunately, Kenny, you don't get to play Cardiff, Exeter, Brighton and Oldham in the league.

 

He did manage to win the league and cup double and the league a few times and the premier league with Blackburn. So he can't be that bad. I remember reading that Shearer wasn't happy playing with Ginola because he wouldn't cross the ball first time but fannied on with it too much. Was that wrong?

 

Or Man City x2, Man Utd, Stoke x2 & Chelsea.

Dagliesh wasn't too bad at Newcastle. Ginola, Beardsley and Ferdinand all (for different reasons) wanted to go irrespective of who came in to replace Keegan. In 16 months Dagliesh brought in Speed, Hamann, Given, Solano and even Dabizas wasn't terrible. Ok Charvet, Tomasson Guiv'arch and a couple of others were pretty terrible... but i don't think he was a disaster for us. Gullit on the other hand, don't get me started!
