Probably very little different to Saints fans calling Pompey fans "Skates".

Why do you let it bother you?

They may have started as degoratory terms, but have become banal with overuse - I just see it as an identifier - we're rivals - we are Skates, you're Scummers and everyone else can bog off. Have you noticed the reactions from both sides when fans of other (nearby clubs) try and start a rivalry? They're given short shrift.

I still don't get the hatred bit though.

    Totally agree Rickie but,

If you are posting this sort of material,

"Got peed off by a skate on Wednesday so resorted to taking it out on a keyboard with the 'NO ONE WILL BEAT ME' attitude".

Your own words I believe, make you look a bit silly now, I'm afraid.

If being called a Scummer offends you, but you happily use the term Skate yourself, which could be considered an equally derogatory term to some Pompey grown ups (not me though), familys etc; just because of the shirt they wear, what do you think that makes you?

Sorry to come over so strong but you really should retract that statement.

To show there are no hard feelings, I have changed the title of this thread. If you don't like it SB3, sorry about that, but I think we can all learn to tolerate each other better and, in some cases, actually start to like some, of our friends, from up the road, if we work at it, there are a lot of really great Southampton posters on here you know, including you Rickie, I know you are a good guy!:)

At the end of the day we are people first, football fans second and there are people I know that I like, get on with, better than others, because of who they are, not who they support.

    I won't deny that mate.

I'm not a rude person but this one person wound me up so much that I became a keyboard warrior for a few minutes.

Honestly the first time I have called anyone a 'skate'.

I don't think many people actually call Pompey and that, in my experience.

Yes the Northam do in one song buy in person not really.

Buy you look on Facebook Nd twitter and its all status' of scummers this scummers that which is way over the top.

Also yes the abuse any Saints player got when taking a throw or corner at Fratton Park this season was ludicrous.

And I really don't think you will see any Saints fans do the same come next weekend <ok>

So the whole of St Marys singing, "Be a man my son and shoot the Pompey Scum!" or however it goes, was all in my imagination then?

    I'm confused now.

Oh dear have I offended a scummer or two? I hope you are not suggesting it was a deliberate tactic Meowth, I was merely starting a debate amongst Pompey fans, if they don't like it, that stripey lot from down the road should stick to their own board, just as I do now!<whistle>

The truth is Rickie, this forum (and many others sadly) is full of the Scum/Skate terminology, Pompey/Saints fans abuse each other in different ways with equal ferocity and those that indulge in these illicit pleasures deserve each other.

We, who can rise above it, are the true fans, the sensible ones who can converse with our rivals, without resorting to personal rancour.

So don't let them win by getting the better of you, which I'm ashamed has happened to me, more than once, although I never called anyone a you know what yet! (I hope)

If it really is bothering you that much, SB3 I will change it back and also apologise for editing your art.

Let me know what you want me to do.

Just trying to keep things civil as my job (for which I receive no money and precious little thanks) dictates.:)

Hi Meowth, it does not really bother me, maybe you could change it from Southampton to something inoffensive like 'the pony fiddlers' instead of such a nasty derogatory term of 'SCUM'? <whistle> Just kidding of course! <laugh>

I think SB has a point PM, as it is the Pompey board and nobody has to read it from Southampton.
But I do know such things offend a gentleman like yourself.
In fact it just shows the difference in society today.
I would like to think I was some where between yourself and SB

I, like meowth, prefer to refrain from terms such as 'skates' and 'scummers'. What you say is true of course though Possum. However, with the derby just a week away, I think that meowth's action could be described as the equivalent of moving the can of petrol a few feet further away from the fire.

I would recommend any Saints or Pompey fans that haven't already done so, to read this http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/133613-Countdown-to-the-Derby-a-joint-message

Unfortunately the term Scum or Scummer is also cultural - primitive it might be, but I remember my parents saying "Oh, this Saturday we have go to pop down to scum" - its just something that I have always grown up with.

Southampton = scum or scummers - not in a derogitory stance, but its has just become the word to use instead of Southampton.

I have a saints fan friend who lives close by in Southsea - even he say on a Saturday afternoon "Oh, can't come to the pub, going out with mates in scumhampton".

Its an odd one - but RLGB - please done take it heart!

    For once, you're right!:emoticon-0106-cryin

Did you catch the great comedy on offer at Fratton Park today though?

Also, did they have a fire drill?

    South Coast Derby...who will win?

Depends - If the SFC of the weekend turn up ..then its draw!
    - If the PFC of the current season turn up ..2-0 Saints
-If the PFC team which beat BCFC turns up ...Tough to predict! Let battle commence!!

Lets make it a good atmosphere and not ruin it with idiots!

All the best to you boys for remainder of the season
