England teams from my youth included players like Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Gordon Banks, later on players like Emlyn Hughes and Kevin Keegan and then Bryan Robson and Terry Butcher.

All these players, and many others, would run through brick walls for England. When they lost or went out of a tournament you could see that they were totally devastated. Remember Gazza's tears at Italia '90, he may have been a bit daft, but at least he cared.

My 13 year old son is football mental, but who are his role models? Over paid, big headed twats, who think that they are special people because they are good at kicking a football.

Great article. 110% agree have some rep

Nothing grinds my gears more about the England team than Wayne Rooney standing there as if his lips are glued together.

If it was me in the same position I would be bellowing out our National Anthem with pride.

Wayne Rooney disgusts me. Not just for the above. Kids now will be looking up to Rooney and I bet you in about 10-15 years time we will have a full England team of players like Rooney. Spoilt arrogant little ****s, with no respect for refs, slamming random elbows in playes faces, shagging prostitutes, cheating on their girlfriends/wives, snorting the devils dandruff etc etc (no evidence of that yet but it will come). The national tabloids will have a field day.

    Rant over

On the subject of Rooney, he went downhill in my estimation when we had that shocker after the world cup (against eastern european team I can't remember) and they were booed off and he had the cheek to moan to the camera about the booing. Well play to your ****ing ability and you won't get booed dickhead!

I lost all very little respect I had for him after that.

People saved for years to go to the World Cup; paid through the nose for the tickets and when the team put in another below par performance the ****** wonders why the team is booed?

I love it when the Jock writes about England! <laugh>

Agree about not feeling the same way about England but it's more football in general for me. I think the media needs to take a share of the blame in all of this - they polarise every single incident and follow the top players EVERYWHERE to the point that they cannot hope to be normal people. Of course I realise they make extraordinary money but they are still human-beings.
We need to remember that the world is a very different place since 1996 and that people are very diifferent too... it's easy to focus on the negative aspects because they are always the ones that are thrust in our faces by the media/press and we always forget that there are a great deal of footballers who do care about their fans and local community, they never get the headlines because being a decent, well meaning person just isn't interesting enough for the British media.

My view from over the wall is always neutral* :)

    * Neutral as in being polite to oppressive Saxon bastards but come the revolution we'll embargo haggis and you'll not be able to celebrate Burns night! The timorous wee beastie will become a ravenous behemoth!

I agree with everything you said... apart from the bit about the national anthem. No don't get me wrong, i LOVE England. But i CANNOT STAND "our" national anthem. It doesn't have a drop of passion in it, and to be honest, while i'm not especially anti-monarchy, i really wouldn't be up for singing it because it doesn't mean anything to me. In fact, i think i would respect a player more for not singing *if* they had a reason not to (the were against the monarchy, for example).

Get a new anthem that says something about England and the people who live there and we'll sing. At the minute all we have is a dull song about a bunch of rich, seemingly simple minded people who are only in that position because they were born in the right family.

Change 'God save the Queen' for something with passion, maybe 'Jerusalem', or 'English country garden'!

I totally agree. Plus it's the British national anthem. The Scottish and Welsh have their own, so why can't we.

Jerusalem is magnificent but my choice would be the blaydon races.
