I wasn't at the 73 cup final so missed out on our sole success in the nearly 40 years since. I was there in 85, 90, 92 & of course that incredible 97/98 play off final. I went to all the England games in the 96 Euros, including that soul destroying semi final v Germany. In short, my abiding memories of the old Wembley are all losing horror shows. I hated the place and was overjoyed they pulled it down. I've never been to the new Wembley, not even outside it but despite all the horror shows of the old one, I am desperate to sample the new one and especially as a Sunderland fan. This is a new era in every respect now. Come on Martin and the lads. Bring it home tonight and again next month and again the month after. Make our memories of the new Wembley all good ones.
Iremember 85 with Norwich as if it were yesterday. Went down with Smiths Happyways coaches from Your neck of the woods Cest. Norwich fans were great crack, pity about the result & poor David Corner copping the flack. Piss poor toilets that had two ends, a deep one & an even deeper one, ****e bar areas & even ****er beer. Stopped off at some service station on the way back, pre toilets on coaches days, & got on the wrong coach pissed as fook. Woke up in some blokes house in Doxy Park & his lass cooked me some breakfast & drove me back to Stanley. Happy days, lol.
Went down with the sacriston lads. Stopped at mill hill overnight. What a ****ing hair raising adventure that was. It would be easier to tell you what didn't happen. Lol One of the most memorable weekends of my life, spoiled by the result but never forgotten because of Lord Rowell's tribute at the end. I just want a happy Wembley memory for the football reasons and not just for the drinking and parties before and after.
Went with my Dad to 85 - Griersons coaches driven by my dad's cousin John Corner! (Family price = free!!) I was 9 years old when we played the cup final - I remember watching Clive Walkers penalty and I'm sure Chris Woods is smiling for the camera as he dives!! Mercantile Credit Classic - bloody hell!! we were ****e at that one Swindle Town in the Play-Offs - never turned up again but got promoted due to their financial irregularities!! 92 FA Cup final - Super Johnny Byrne - only he misses a sitter at 0-0 and we get beat 2-0!! Then finally I saw a match where we turned up - Play Off Final 1998 (Seems like yesterday) - Sunderland AFC 4 - 4 Charlton Athletic The only left footer to take a penalty in the entire game passes it to the keeper!! I've honestly enjoyed every journey to the stadium but not every journey away from!!
I was at the '73 final but my first visit to Wembley was in '71 with a Liverpol pal for their game against Arsenal. Unfortunately the team I was supporting on the day also lost, so apart from our sole success in '73, like many others, all of my trips to Wembley have resulted in a miserable trip home. Surely we are due a change of fortunes if we can get past Everton tonight?
I was there is '73, unforgetable day..packed with emotion. Have also been there for all the subsequent finals and although its great to actually go to Wembley, there's no fun in the drive back after losing. Just hope in my lifetime, I get to see my club again lift a trophy at Wembley..God, I hope its this year
Was there in 1990 when we got totally outplayed by Swindon. We were near the front and remember there being thousands of those annoying bloody flies everywhere. On the bus outside wembley we were parked next to a bus full of swindon fans and whilst it was all fairly amicable we were giving it all macari's a thief, going down etc etc not actually realising what was to come. All in all though a pretty crap day out!
I was there 1985 and 1990, in 1990 i boarded a 1960's 'luxury' coach which broke down on the way back near Leicester, and i retired from going to away matches in 1991 after that caper, but went to the semi against Millwall and suffered again, but would love to go to the new Wembley.
Hardest games to lose were the Swindon & Charlton play off games. So disappointed not to go up, although we did when Swindon got bumped. The Norwich game was appalling and we got played off the midfield by that fat twat Molby in '92. Here's to a new era
Only the play off final for me. My legs were black and blue from celebrating and banging into seats. I remember when Summerbee scored i ended up 3 rows down and about 5 seats along from where I was, no idea how. Remember watching the 1992 cup final at home with the full white kit on and being gutted when we wore blue shorts because I didn't match. I was only 6 but I blamed the defeat on my mam for that faux pas
Yes the Charlton result was hard to take at the time but it was then followed by one of the best seasons it has ever been my privilege to watch.
**** yes. The Mercantile Credit classic shambles. How could I forget that huge pail of dogshite from the football league. Beaten off friggin Wigan on penalties when they were nowt more than a pub side. Just another wasted journey south that one.
Great memories of the Play-off final. Was on holiday in the Lake District. Had to get early train from Windermere to Oxenholme and then down to Euston. Met a few Lads on the train down - coming from Scotland! Any way we all know what happened in the match but what a rollercoaster it was. The next day all the papers said it was the finest game ever to be played at Wembley. Privilege to be there. When the final whistle went had to leg it from the stadium and back to Euston for the last train back to Windermere. Got back absoloutely knackered after sharing some tins with the Scots lads again. Happy days.
Was There 1973 what a feeling what a day what a weekend what a week . Never forget never ever .. thank you MR.D. WASTON & MR. R. PITT THANK'S GUY'S..
The 73 cup final was a bit too early for me although I have seen the game on video and it was very entertaining. I was there in 85 with by brother and remember wondering why there was water coming down the walls just to find out as I climbed the concrete stairs that it was piss! We broke down on the way and only made it to the ground with 5 minutes to spare. I also remember some fat bloke giving me a cuddle and a kiss when we got the penalty which we of course missed (first ever cup final penalty miss although they always say it was Liverpool which was the first ever FA Cup final miss). I also went to the Swindon play off final which we lost and the Mercantile Credit Football Festival which we lost to Wigan (you can see a pattern here). The best thing about the Mercantile Credit Football Festival was supporting Tranmere Rovers when they played Newcastle as they played them off the park. Been a few times to see England as well including the last Scotland home international (not Euro 1996) when we found we had tickets for the Scotland end and there was a riot in the section just below us!
