Demba Ba has 16 goals this term, where as the the best goal scoring season Shearer has had was 22.

Do you think Ba will beat Shearer's record?

Personally i think he will fall just short, as he's not in great goalscoring form at the moment.

I also think Cisse next season, will beat Shearer's record aslong as Ba stays.

    What are your thoughts? :)

22 really? i thought it'd be more than that. Yeah, Ba (providing he stays) or Cisse have the ability to beat that next year

22 wasn't shearer's record, it was the last season any one player scored more than 16 goals. he got 25 in 96/7, and 23 in 99/00 and 01/2.

Thanks for ruining my thread. ;)
He got 34 goals according to Wikipedia in 94/95 for Blackburn.
Most he scored for Newcastle was 25 in 96/97 in the 31 games! :D

Nevermind Matt! I was thinking when I read it, "****in hell he must have scored a lot of cup goals some seasons!!!" I think Demba will finish on 20 goals. Anyone else think he looked very leggy 2nd half yesterday. Indeed his body language suggested he wanted to come off. It was unthinkable leaving him out a while ago but we may have to manage him through to make sure we get the best from him.

I'd imagine we'll stick to the same formation for the rest of the season, as it worked really well and allowed all players except Ba to do what they do best. Ba seemed to be a bit wider than he wanted to be, but he'll still get a few more this season. I reckon Cisee can beat the record next year though.

There's little chance Ba will plunder another 10 goals to beat Big Al's record.

In fact I will state it now... <whistle>

Don't think you can really compare them.

Alan Shearer was a better striker and all round player.

When he lost his pace after his injuries, Shearer gained strength to add something to his game. He was just a perfect all round pro and player.

I don't think we can compare Ba to Shearer until Ba has had a few seasons in the PL.

you can still compare scoring records tho, season wise. All round talent then yes, gonna need more time.

Ba is a much better player than Shearer in his last couple of seasons here.

There's nothing wrong with Ba, either generally or in the curretn formation. He had 2 shots well saved yesterday, was about 4" away from scoring the first instead of Cisse and a tumble in the box away from scoring the 3rd instead of Cisse. Sometimes the ball just doesn't go in. He's still creating chances and sooner or later they will start going in.

Agreed but overall you can't compare anyone to the great man. His record of being the highest premier league scorer of all time will probably remain for decades.

Talk about a natural finisher and power in the air, immense

How many Testimonial games have been better attended than Big Als?

Think that speaks volumes for how much we thought of him.

Problem for Ba's scoring record is the fact he isn't the focal point of the attack anymore. He's playing more as a link up man now and hanging round the edge of the box leaving Cisse to gamble in the box. Think he's also having to do more of the legwork defensively while Cisse is still adapting to the intensity of the PL. Doubt he, or anyone will beat Shearer's 34 goals in a PL season, remarkable record.

Really pleased with how Ba has selflessly adapted his game to allow the introduction of Cisse. Ba looked tired 2nd half Sunday, and I think we should tread carefully. There will not be many seasons in his career where his body will have had to stand so much football. The deeper role asks more again and he has had the ACON with travel mid season.

Comparing him with Shearer generally is a non starter at this stage. Shearer was an incredible talent. Even at the end of his career, when he was on the pitch he was still lethal. His all round game just got better and better.

AB it was never about who was better, more so as originally planned could Ba beat his record this season!
But after much reading, i have decided.
With Shearer scoring 34 goals in the EPL, i can't see Ba or anyone else doing that.

    :)
