Reading the paper today, and understandably he has not been allowed to talk to the press about his contract, but I did see this:

Barton spoke at a charity dinner in aid of the Clarke Lister Foundation on Tuesday night, claiming he still wanted to stay at Newcastle, but was unhappy at being asked to take such a big pay cut to do so.

    www.journallive.co.uk/nufc/newcastl...keep-his-cool-61634-28393214/2/#ixzz1HW25L3vo

Do you believe it's true? And if would you let him stay on his current wage deal or make an example of him by refusing to offer the same terms?

Tricky one this, I know we shouldnt but I'd let him keep the 60k a week, we only wanted him to take a 10k cut and while Ashley wouldnt notice that minor saving (to him anyway) we would certainly have a weaker team without Barton in the side. We also wouldnt get much money for him if we decide to sell him, so we would never find a suitable replacement without a net loss anyway, probably more than the loss of his extra wages. Thoughts?

We wouldn't get much for him, we wouldn't find a decent replacement for whatever we do get, as you said. I also couldn't bear to see him play for another team if I'm honest. I don't want him to go, he could be here at the top of his game for years to come, potentially captain material.

Keep, please. Just get the bloody contract signed so we can all sleep easier at night.

Keep him on same wage is getting now

You're right we could never replace him with the fee (if we get one) for his transfer

Our most creative player this season, big big fan of Barton and his new attitude

Footballers taking pay cuts is very very rare, i wouldn't begrudge him what he's asking for

Agree with you all, he is only asking to keep the terms he is on and when Nolan is ousted in the side by a better, younger player I would hope and expect Barton to be captain.

If he's saying he's unhappy at such a large pay cut, I very much doubt we're talking about £10k less per week.

10k off 60k is still 17% reduction, but you're right, they could be asking him to drop to 40 or even lower. I think it's down to 50 though because Tiote's on that now and we wouldnt allow Carroll to have more than that, seems to be our limit.

I wonder what will happen to Colo, who is supposedly on 80k a week, when we renew his contract, that would be a big ask of him to go to 50 but I dont think he'd get that anywhere else. I digress though, back to Barton.

That minor saving is half a million pounds a year. Fat Mike's a businessman, he'd notice half a million quid. I personally think we need to have a wage structure in place, if not we go back to the dark days of overpaid mercenaries. We should have a max wage if players don't understand that then they should go.

Interesting point, not sure he'd be willing to take a £30k a week cut. Whens his contract run out? We cant lose colo <yikes>!

    Give Joey his wages.

    Simple economics.

I'm not sure if I believe this yet.
If it is true then I dont see the problem in him taking a pay cut as long as its nothing under 40k

Hopefully we've got him on a lower basic wage with appearance fees making up the ~£55k/w...

If Bartons out of contract we should just let him go to Sunderland on a free.

Oh, you're talking about Joey? We should bend over backwards to keep him.

Barton owes us a lot, if it really is only a 10k paycut and he wont accept it he should **** off.
