I know he was a rugby player but he was an all white and wales legend and a gentleman. sadly he lost his battle with cancer today and will be sadly missed. he was one of the giants of R.U and well liked by all who knew him. RIP swerve..
I'm not a rugby fan but those of us of a certain age can't fail to remember this guy. One of Welsh rugby's legends.
There's a terrific item on BBC Wales page, entitled "The Mervyn Davies Story",well worth a look see, even for non rugby fans. Mervyn came from virtually nowhere to captain Wales and The Lions. He was also a son of Swansea, and we should be just as proud of him as if he had played football, and not rugby.
Was lucky enough to see him play several times, a true leader on the pitch, RIP Mervyn you've earned your rest.
Just like to add, well done Dai for posting this, I went to the Rugby section and there's nothing on there.
What a sad loss. Meet him as a nipper many times as he lived up the road from me. Used to walk pass my house with a pair of boots in hand, always said hello. Could never believe how tall he was. Sad loss for his family and for Swansea. Sad Day!!!!
Back when we won, one the Grand Slams, he was driven up Trewyddfa Road, in an open top Land rover all the locals were out to greet him.
It must have been about the time he moved to Pontlliw, because I remember him being driven past my home in an open top vehicle. The place was jumping, decorations everywhere. He looked shellshocked by the reception he received. Bless him.
Was it the British lions series win over south africa in 74, because i can recall the same happening to Gareth Edwards after that tour they put him in a car with an open top and drove all the way from neath railway station to Cwmgors and all through the villages people were out cheering. Good times RIP Merve the swerve a great loss to our nation. And one of Wales's favourite sons.
