Now i am the first to admit, i think they are huge horrible animals.....and never ever bet on them....not even the national... but i know many of you like it. But this seems a bit exteme for a supposed humain sport....... Or is it just for more corned beef?... Five racehorses have died at the Cheltenham Festival over the first two days of the event. The most recent deaths occurred on Wednesday after two animals were injured in the Coral Cup. Featherbed Lane lost his action and was pulled up after the fifth jump. It was later confirmed the seven-year-old had been humanely destroyed after suffering a broken leg. We try to minimise the risk as much as we can, but sadly these things happen. Clerk of the course Simon Claisse Abergavenny fell at the third and had to be put down because of a leg fracture. Wishfull Thinking also suffered a fall in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, with the horse rolling under the rails and into a crowd of spectators. Jockey Richard Johnson suffered a minor injury and a photographer sustained a facial injury, but the horse was reported to be fine. It came after the opening day of the festival, when three horses died. Clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: "Regrettably we had three fatalities, two in the cross-country race. "We'd had 27 races and 375 runners on the cross-country course since 2000 and up until today only one fatality. "We try to minimise the risk as much as we can, but sadly these things happen." The worst overall tally of fatalities during the Cheltenham Festival came in 2006 when nine horses died. The tragedy comes just weeks before the Grand National, which last year was marred by the deaths of two contenders. Ornais broke its neck when it fell at the fourth fence. The race had to divert round the fence on the second circuit and miss out Becher's Brook to avoid the body of Dooney's Gate, which had broken its back.
Not pleasant I know but what is the alternative? Without racing (A 3.7 billion a year industry) Its not like they would be running free over the downs chatting favourite type of hay. I know some find the whole thing distasteful and perhaps think it best they weren't bred at all but I would suggest they try sitting on a horse and have a go at getting it to do something it does not want to...... virtually impossible, they love it.
I guess they are including gambling but that from the British Horse Racing authority like and referring to 2008 but I think the industry does genuinely support a lot of jobs.
anyone got any tips? Won 2 bets already this week with regards to the football and got £10 free off coral so might put it on the horses
Comes with the territory Commachio. The animals are bred to race. They absolutely love it, and in the main live the life of luxury most horses could only dream of. I do understand those who just hate it and think its cruel. I think it mainly comes from a lack of understanding of the sport. Its terribly sad when horse loses its life doing something it loves. Where there are trends or high numbers of fatalities, its not like they do nothing. They are properly investigated and remedial action taken where necessary. A lot of people die doing the sport they love, the argument is that horse does not choose to take part. I disagree because a horse will not do anything it does not want to, if it doesn't want to race trainers are the first to give them away. Its an argument that will run to the end of time. I'd recommend a small each way on Divers and Up the Beat at Cheltenham Poolie
I'd have to disagree with this. Horses jump, whether they racehorses or not. Hence you will often see horses escape from fields by jumping a fence. They are taught to jump better of course by horse trainers to help them to improve their technique and avoid hurting themselves. But running and jumping is definetly natural to a lot of horses.
Poolie, can you place a wager in the States? Today at Santa Anita Park, 8th race: Tiabelle. Good luck if you get it in. Santa Anita is in Los Angeles area, one of the biggest race courses here. Held the Breeder's Cup on several occasions. My life's passion.
alright boys just got in and had a great day on the horses first race started badly and my horse came last second race my horse that I backed each way came 2nd so got a few quid third race I won and my other horse came 2nd backed at each way Big bucks then won me the next race and in the last race I backed my horse came 4th, new I shud of backed cockney mackem each way
That's all well and good mate.. But spill the beans...how much? and have you told your lass? if not keep it for the Bangkok friendly.....
only 70odd quid mate, around christmas time I opened an account on coral and put £20 in and thought each week I would put little daft bets on the football for instance real madrid, barca and valencia all to win and £5 on and when my £20 had gone that was it. Today was the first time I have ever placed a bet on the horses apart from the grand national and currently have £233.17, hopefully add a few quid to that as I have backed a few horses in the races at Cheltenham tomorrow
Yep had a silly forecast bet at Cheltenham yesterday. Saw the name The Cockney Mackem was running and also saw Salut Flo in the same race. So Flo won at 9/2 fav and Mackem second at 10/1. I'll never say a bad word about Tore Andre again!!
Had Des Champ, riverside boy and big buck treble yesturday was sweating on me forth beating SunnyHillBoy for £1500 which it did not still £100 pound and £50 up on the week with today to come.... I love a flutter me!
