Barnsley's Assistant Manager Dave Flitcroft gave his post-match thoughts at St Mary's Stadium. "First 25-30 minutes I thought the boys did everything we planned," said Flitcroft. "They did everything they could." "It was only when they scored it settled an outstanding team down. "They move the ball quick and pass it well." "It was quite overwhelming at times. They're the best team in the division."
Very nice of him saying that, finally someone is giving our team the credit they deserve. I quite like Barnsley and I hope they do all right next season. We play quite good football at times, almost as good as Dag & Redbridge.
Sky interviewed Barnsley's kitman about a month or so I go - who I believe has pretty much done every job going at Barnsley at some point during his life; player, coach, club secretary etc - and he said that we were the best side to visit Oakwell so far this season. So fair play to them for giving us credit again after today too - especially as we were pretty poor in the first half.
I think his comments are fair enough. In the first half an hour they were the better side and Saints were sloppy with their passing and looked lethargic. Their number 7 had a great opportunity from an unmarked header to put them one goal up but that is Barnsley's problem, since they lost Vaz Te they are not scoring. They loaned Nouble and he looks quite decent but they are still light up front, although Matt Done almost came back to haunt us like he did for Rochdale last year.
I thought Barnsley looked impressive, a good solid outfit with a good manager who gets them playing quick attacking wide football... good luck to them.
When we went 1 nil up today it reminded me of a game against scunthorpe a few years back. We won it 1 nil, but left thinking we had been outplayed by an exciting team. We went on to dominate today but when we got that goal against the run of play, and given Hill's previous achievements it was quite easy to make the parrallels between him and Adkins (less perhaps adkins unflappable prowess which I'd imagine most politicians are envious of). Like the bloke, seems to get teams playing good footie and I thought he nailed it on his comments re pompey a few weeks back
