Right now we've got the miserable **** stopped, back to the football and the small matter of the derby. Does anyone have a routine they go through every derby day, or some kind of ritual that you think must take place?

Me I'm not the superstitious type really but a few mates are. One of my mates has the same pre match breakie, and kisses the badge on a painting he has up in the spare room. We pointed out this was ridiculous and had no bearing. His response?

"I was born in 1976, the year we made the league cup final and that is what the painting is from. My dad kissed that painting every year until he handed the baton to me. I've kissed it every year since 1989 and the results since then suggest you lot are talking horseshite! It must happen"

I'm totally non superstitious so have no actual pre-match rituals. However, I have a theory that Newcastle never do as well when I watch them live, either at St. James' or on telly. Also, I've noticed that they play badly if I wear my replica top, but much better if I inadvertently wear something in a similar colour to the opposition. The best indicator though, is the number of magpies (the feathered kind) I spot before a match. One for sorrow, two for joy etc.. Yesterday one flew overhead carrying a twig back to it's nest. It's sure to mean something, I just haven't worked out what yet. Like I say, totally non superstitious.

It means the Magpies are going to put 1 in the net.

1-0 to us is the score I'm now going to put my money on.

Might cover myself with 3-1 to us though.

Usually go for a Chinese meal before game but as early kick off not happening.
Will go home and get drunk no matter what the outcome.

Oh no. Got up this morning to news that a meteor has been spotted over the north. These things are always portents of catastrophe. I'm fearing the worst again now.
