Liverpool have qualified for the Europa League by winning the League cup.

However - if they *also* qualify by their finishing position in the Premiership, their Europa Lague places does NOT go to Cardiff, it goes to the next team down in the Premiership. The same goes for the FA cup.

This means that, if Liverpool finish in 5th place, or win the FA cup, 6th place in the Premiership gets into Europe (7th, if Liverpool win the FA cup)

HOWEVER - the runner-up of the FA cup will get a Europa league place *if* the winner of the cup qualifies for the Champions League. UNLESS the runner up already has a Europa league place, in which case, it goes to the Premiership.

    so.

Ultimately, to ensure 7th place in the Premiership gets into Europe, Liverpool need to finish 7th or higher, aand the FA cup final needs to be Chelsea v Tottenham (with both teams finishing in the top 4) or Chelsea/Tottenham v Liverpool.

I reckon Newcastle will get into Europe if we manage 7th place at the end of the season.

The most simple way to look at it is this.

The 2 FA Cup finalist need to be 2 from 3: Spurs, Chelsea or Liverpool.

If this happens then 6th place gets the spot.

I cant see us finishing 5th this year, so all hope is on the FA Cup (sadly).

What Sousers winning the LC meant to us is we dont need to worry about them anymore, no matter where they finish, the Euro place gets passed on.

So assuming, for example, Chelsea win a Spurs/Chelsea FA cup final and Liverpool finish 6th and us 7th would we be eligible for a europoa league spot?

    Not quite.

The only time a Euro place gets passed down is when a team wins a European spot due to a cup, but also finish in a Euro spot on the table. Obviously they can't have two European places, so it gets passed down.

For that reason, it will only get passed down if Liverpool finish 5th OR if the finalists of the FA Cup finish in positions 1 to 5, where Liverpool can then finish 6th in that newly created Euro spot, pushing that spot down to 7th.

If Liverpool finish outside of any European places (whether it's 1-4th, or 5th or 6th) then they get their own European spot and nothing gets passed down.

True, but I think what he was getting at is, if it comes down to Liverpool and us fighting for 5th, it doesn't matter who wins: we either finish 5th (and qualify) or Liverpool finish fifth and pass on their place.

Same goes for 6th provided it's a Chelsea/Spurs/Liverpool FA cup final

Yes, as long as 2 of Chelsea, Tottenham or Liverpool make the cup final and we finish 7th behind the other teams currently in the top 7 then we would be in Europe.

Actually, only Chelsea Spurs and Liverpool need to remain in the top 7: Arsenal (or the two Manchesters, which seems unlikely) could drop out without affecting matters

    Exactly.

If Liverpool dont finish in a Euro spot, then it will because we did instead, so who cares.

As far as we are concerned as long as we dont free fall out of the top 7, it all comes down to the FA Cup Final being Chelsea, Spurs or Liverpool. And looking at the draw with these teams being at home and avoiding each other, it looks pretty good.

Which takes me onto Sunday's Derby. I see only Sunlund being a realistic threat to 7th place for us (even thats unlikely) so if we beat em, thats a 13 point gap. This game is bigger than usual.

....I could also mention that Sunlund have a chance at qualifying for Europe through FA Cup themselves, but that isnt going to happen!! :D

Just out of curiosity do you want to qualify for the europa league? Seeing the impact its had on fulham, stoke and birminghams league campaigns id be wary.

I think the best thing for newcastle and sunderland would be to just miss out. Bring in a couple of players in the summer and go for it next season.

What you fail to realise that everytime newcastle have qualified for Europe (8 or 9 times) it has never effected our league form. We're are not a small time team like fulham/stoke and co who cant cope with doing both.

Even when we played 14 Champions League games in 2002/3...we still finished 3rd.

NUFC can cope with Europe because its where we belong.

    Seconded.

Though we'd need half a dozen players in the summer to make it be true

I don't know really. We can talk about club size and stature all day long, but if the numbers don't add up, then they don't add up.

We had some top, top players back in the CL days, and it meant that the back-up in our squad was good as well. If you look at the subs benchs we were able to put out back then, and compare it to what we can put out now, there's a marked difference.

I know what your saying, but really if you look at that Sir Bob team in 02, it wasnt big. Pretty similar to what we have now.
