Not formula one I know, however, when I got to page 121 of this weeks autosport, I got a bit of a lump in my throat. When I was younger, a friend's father was involved in clubmans racing, and I used to join them on race days. We went all over the country. There were many drivers in the category, from all various backgrounds, and my friend and I would be engaged in conversation, be taught about the cars and driving, and all the drivers would take the time to talk to us and there was a real spirit of togetherness. And the racing was superb. In amongst this was a driver called Vernon Davies. He was everything above, and a bloody good driver to boot. He never had the money of some of the competitors, but he was always fighting at the front. I believe as does my friend, and his father, that he was one of the great undiscovered talents. He lost his battle with cancer on march 8th.
Oh dear dear dearââ¬Â¦ I did not realise this Bubbles. I was out of the country and completely unaware. Thanks for telling me. My sincerest condolences to the Davies family.
Being honest, I no longer mix in those circles, as the formula changed, and familiar faces left. Vernon was however from what I recall as the most formative years of my motorsport life, and I can vividly recall races which he won, and talking to him and his mechanic Claude, once even pushing their car round the paddock at silverstone trying to get the thing started. I felt that I could not let the moment pass in silence.
Did you know him cosi? Not being aware of your history, he is someone you may have come across, especially in the mid to late 90's
This is very sad news. Losing someone close to you is one of the worst feelings to experience. My thoughts go his family.
