I should be happy considering our great performance which has taken us to the quarter finals of the cup...However, I can't help feeling ashamed of the pathetic turn out from our supporters in what was in my opinion our biggest game of the season...Why?
It was embarrassing MRAW however the atmosphere created by those in the ground was superb. Lets see how many of these tossers want tickets for the Wembley games if we are fortunate enough to get there. They will come crawling out of the woodwork professing to be always there. If we beat our cousins from the dark side up the road we should be looking at 40+ crowds again.
It's a sign of the times though isn't it? People simply can't justify shelling out for football matches when there are more important things to spend money on.I know quite a lot in the manchester are either laid off or only on 3days so its understandable We have Porto at home this Wednesday and I'll be very surprised if there are more than 25k there. Do you think you would be challenging for 4th if Busface had gone earlier?
I think the attendance was due to the fact that the cup doesn't have the appeal it once had. I was looking at some of the average attendances at cup games from the 1st round proper to the final and in 1972/73 (can't remember who won the cup that season <s>) the average was 18,306 but last season it was 13,313. Quite a significant drop and a sign of the times I guess.
The money does affect the crowd but, £20 for the concourse wasn't a bad deal think it was a tenner for the kids as well. Will still put it down to the game being on the telly and a 5:15 kick off, not on the telly then the crowd would probably have been bigger. As said the atmosphere was better than when we had an extra 10,000 in so maybe the ones that did manage to get to the game enjoyed it a bit more, no doubt the result helped.
I have to say the poor crowd did surprise me, I know it was on TV and 5.15 is a funny time for a kick off and I guess many season ticket holders are not willing to cough up the extra £20 to watch the game? But still it was a poor show. For the ones there it was a great atmosphere and I thought the chant about 'Cheating Arsenal' hit a raw nerve with their fans. The gooners really were chocolate soldiers and fell over at every opportunity which just showed their lack of appetite for the game
I was not that surprised TBH, mind I did epect around 10.000 more. Saturday evening, cold night, on the telly, very tempting and maybe the ones who did not go hould stay away,it was a far better atmosphere without them. Cant agree about cost, lets see how many who could not afford £20. find the cost of a weekend in London if we get there.
It's definitely the cost IMO. If you could just walk in without paying a penny it would be full every week. The trouble with Football is it's like a drug in that it's an on going expensive commitment. Many people will buy a season ticket but promise the Mrs that no matter what happens they won't spend a penny more. Many people who have stopped going will think twice about going back for fear of getting the bug again when they can't afford it in the long run. As for London. Seeing Sunderland at Wembley (I've had that pleasure twice) is worth getting in debt for to most.
I think its quite possible that a lot of the fans who bought season tickets and didnt turn up yesterday have put themselves in debt upto their eyeballs just to be able to buy the season ticket. The extra £20 may well be money they just don't have as its only 2 month since xmas has passed. I'm sure if the price was dropped to £5 or £10 you would have seen a 45k crowd. At some point somebody at the club is going to have to realise that in order to fill the stadium the price of the season ticket needs to drop. These days, people are having to work for their job seekers allowance...
I would loved to have been there. But thats the downside of living in bastard aberdeen. Its very difficult to pop home for the weekend.
