    Youngsters seeking derby win double.

Having rattled in four goals without reply on Tyneside back in October, Newcastle's U18 side make the short journey to Cleadon on Saturday to face their red and white rivals once again in the Premier Academy League.

Kickoff at the academy of plight is at 11am, admission is free and there's spectator car parking on nearby Moor Lane. Postcode is SR6 7UN.

This is a top v bottom clash, with United four points clear in pole position, while the mackems languish seventeen points behind despite having played two more games.

Their away form is better than that on wearside this season thus far, with just four of their 18 points gathered on home turf and five defeats in seven matches.

Nice to hear so much about our youngsters doing well. We must be doing something right.

Ten man Toon salvage derby draw

    Result:
    mackem U18s 2 Newcastle U18s 2

Newcastle's table-topping teens managed to emerge from the academy of plight with a point on Saturday, despite going two goals behind early on and then enduring the dismissal of goalscorer Dennis Knight.

United's youngsters got off to a promising start and after just ten minutes a great break from Dennis Knight and Marcus Maddison saw the latter get into the box and fire in a shot that unfortunately hit fellow Magpie Dan Taylor.

The home side took the lead after 23 minutes when our 'keeper spilled a shot and the ball was forced in by Anthony Callaghan, then just five minutes later the lead was doubled when centre forward Jordan Laidler shot home from inside the box.

United got back into the game after 36 minutes when Maddison was pushed over in the box and Knight converted the penalty to halve the arrears - his seventh league strike of the season and third spot kick success.

It was almost all square three minutes before the break when a smart free-kick from Knight to Maddison on the right of the area saw a low cross reach Remie Streete, but the defender could only steer his effort onto the post.

Knight was sent off with 18 minutes remaining for receiving his second booking after a clash in on halfway - the home player throwing himself to the floor in apparent agony, but springing to his feet just seconds later.
    ( Well tutored )

Magpies coach Dave Watson then introduced fit-again forward JJ Hooper as United tried to salvage a point despite their numerical disadvantage.

And within two minutes it was 2-2 when Brandon Miele's free-kick took a deflection off the head of mackem Lewis Gibbons to send it beyond his 'keeper for an OG.

With howling gales and sleet blowing across the pitch the game entered its late stages with both sides looking to force a memorable victory. ( Not the best of conditions to be watching football out in the open.) Used to do it many years ago but like my comfort now.)

However neither were able to do so and the game ended all square, as sunshine greeted the final whistle. On an adjoining pitch meanwhile, our U16s celebrated a 3-0 success in their derby encounter.

Knight may now miss United's FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Blackburn Rovers on Monday week, although an Academy U18 game is still scheduled for next Saturday 25th against Barnsley (but expected to be postponed).

PS: In another blow to our league and FA Youth Cup hopes, inspirational striker Adam Campbell was spotted at today's game, hobbling around on crutches wearing a protective boot.

Team (tbc): Baird, Logan (Turton 83), Riley, Streete, Storey, Sayer, Maddison (tbc 62), Miele, Knight, Dan Taylor (Hooper 73), Hoganson.
    Subs n/u: tbc.

Sent off: Knight (72 - second yellow)

    Booked: Maddison, Storey, Knight.

Typical cheating makems, why do they have NO class? Looks bad for young Campbell and the YFAC.
