Arsenal's decline bares stark resemblance to ours under Rafa. In hindsight, with a change of owners coming when it did, I think Rafa could have turned us around. I wonder if the goons could do better with anyone but Wenger? Most managers would struggle with the fact Arsenal owners demand a negative net spend each year, which is no mean feat.

Well if we look at the "top" spenders on wages then arsenal are upthere... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13679632

the attached article tells us that

TOP PREMIER LEAGUE WAGE BILLS 2009-10

    Chelsea - £174m (£167m)
    Man City - £133m (£83m)
    Man Utd - £132m (£123m)
    Liverpool - £121m (£107m)
    Arsenal - £111m (£104m)

Source: Deloitte, 2008-09 wage bills in brackets

so ok arseal were spending on wages but since then they've reduced the wage bill... same as LFC and tottenham too. we've dropped form that 120mil to about 90 odd. (we think)

The end reuslt is while clubs like barca, chelsea, city, ac milan (all how have arsenal players now there) are offering big wages for thier bes tplayers and arsenal are not hanging onto guys. Thier contracts are ending and they are moving.

this table is well out of date but the point must be made if you spend less on wages the you acheive less.... utd had to pay rooney the big bucks to keep him... shortly you guys will find nani knocking on the door for example...

this is why i beleive half the palyers who left arsenal left, bigger moeny elsewhere..... the clubs robbing them blind are rich ambitious and big.... but if wneger replaces the quality with dross like he has done the wheels come off big time!

on the question of would the go do better under someone else... thats hard to say.

I think if you look at the moeny sent on players i nthe last 3 years ther eis a case to say they might just have a better team to go with that turnover of thiers....

the new owner will be sackig wenger i think this summer.... if they finish 6th... wow...

According to those same figures, Arsenal spend around 45% of their turnaround on wages. Small compared to the spending of Chelsea and city. Arsenal do have more clout but the board have decided no major breaking of their wage structure.

someone mentioned about british players earlier.

I think lfc have not got the best out of that BUT... i have thought about it and utd, lfc, spurs and even chelsea have all bought british and i think the reason why is they won't be poached by spanish teams..

If you buy a suarez or a hleb or a whomever out forigen (hernandez example) the first thing that happenes if if they go well its links to real constantly... british players don't travel well at all... wenger should have thought of that eh?

parker, given, cahill, all bargains... walcott he can't shift <laugh>

now as much as i enjoy rubbishing arsenal I hope you're lot get tonked tonight <ok>

I don't agree entirely with that mito - Nani could already have ****ed off to Italy and doubled his wages, and Vidic could've gone to Barca and done the same. Both of them are on less than Nasri wanted to stay at Arsenal. Players are willing to stay at a club as long as they are moving forwards and in with a chance of winning stuff.

Clichy was happy to pour scorn all over City's big money in 2009 when Arsenal were in the CL semis and still in with a shout of the league, but as soon as they dropped behind City in the league he was out like a shot. Ditto Torres - he could've forced a move to Chelsea and doubled his wages at pretty much any point from 2008 onwards, but stuck with Liverpool until you dropped out of the CL. And remember Spurs didn't convince Modric to stay by matching Chelsea's wage offer. They convinced him to stay by promising to get back into the CL, which is why Chelsea knew they'd have no chance of getting him in Jan.

Even Rooney basically had the opportunity to go anywhere he wanted for huge wages in 2010 - Utd transfer listed him and said they were going to sell him at which point he could've gone for £300k plus at City or Real. Instead he did a rapid and embarrassing about face, getting a load of grief in the process, for a new contract at Utd which was big, but still a good 25%+ below what he could've got by leaving.

well..... vidic could have... but.. show me the offer that actually came in? i can't say for sure that either player got a firm offer, equally i can't say they didn't. thats the nature of speculation.

However, on a pecking order i'd say utd are higher than morst italian clubs right now it seems but spain are way more attractive.... I do wonder if your two guys did get an offer or not... BUT i still say when the time comes for mr nanai to come kncoking he'll be pointed at wayne and wanting some of that.

You are correct about clichy but... again they looked a joke, when they got CL then the gates opened. 2009 didn't have yaya or agureo etc either.... perhaps its best to say they want a top club and top money.

you are wrong about torres though... he couldn't force any move when injured.... sorry but thats a fact.

on modric... the case put to me was modric was promised by levy that if he'd sign a 5 year deal on modest enough wages 90k <laugh> they'd sell him to a big club if an offer came... they didn't convince him to stay they refused to sell.

finally on rooney... its hardly kaka with the mob at his window when 90mil offer came. utd paid him 250k per week to stay, end of story, he was on about wanting to win **** and you bought him young and jones.... I think the money form city was comparable... if he'd really wnated to go he'd have gone thats fair enough but he got parity by throwing the dummy.

but back to point 1.... first and foremost arsenal bought a lot of kids for half nothing and paid them fortunes, they educated them to think money. If you wish to think the likes of nasri and hleb moved for medals fine... adeabyor even... god that guy whored himself to inter, ac the lot.... its all about the money money money...

the point must be that unitl the actual offer comes speculating on players motives are moot but when that offer comes they're all jumping as fast as thier geedy little legs can lift them... arsneal need to pay up or sing them up longer term and risk them not delivering.

Arsenal were that bad. AC Milan don't look a shadow of the team they were a few years back and still tonked them.

There is another reason why our foreign players don't bugger off at the first hint of interest and this is down to what I alluded to this morning, the fact that they feel they are part of a club with identity which knows what it is and what it is about. I genuinely believe Arsenal have lost this due to Wenger continually buying youngsters from all over the world who don't know what Arsenal are and there are no longer the old heads to instill this in them.

United, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and City all have this sense of being in spades. Not so long ago so did the arse, I'm not sure they do anymore.

maybe so ruff, you keep telling yourself that... <laugh>

look being nice i can clearly see what you are saying as utd are the bench mark of success in england so if you can't get into barca's team there's no place else ebtter to win medals that matter....

the scale i think is though slightly different that just that.

    1. CL football, this seems to be a defining trait for footballers, you are in they look at you, you are out you are not looked at.

    2. Money. can you may the rate asked

    3. medals.

for me ok utd are clearly offering all 3 (right now ha ha) So are city.... add a league title this year as they will be even more attractive. Arsenal are not offering 2 and 3.. so they are getting gervinho types.

If i conceed that utd are retianing players (rooney is the only hard evidence to my mind) they have failed to attract in the sneidjer type..... jones, young de gea all are up and comings who we all know would jump at utd but you're not competing even with city for them are you?

Utd need to sign the likes of sneidjer, dare i say it van der saar and ronaldo to go win another CL this side of 2015 anyway (3 years is as long as anyone can predict in football.)

leaving utd aside... arsenal if finihsing 6th offer nothign to anyone so MUST offer wads of dough to attract players to get back in there.
