Remember being young and watching Euro 96 and enjoying the banter in the house. The England v Scotland match was an interesting one as i'm half English & half Scottish. Neither my Mam or Dad revel in each others' nations' defeat, but the stories of past matches between the two interested me. It was passionate without being over the top. I had already been to City but that wasn't the start of me supporting them, that camer later. Up till then, my football knowledge was obtained from me creeping out my room and watching Match of the Day when my old man fell a sleep on the couch after a few too many down the pub.
It was Uni mates for me. Most of my family are egg chasers, so I had very little access/knowledge of City growing up, only my grandad, but he was too old to go. Football didn't do much for me. Then I was studying over in Germany, and got taken by some mates to see Borussia Dortmund vs. Werder Bremen. First experience of a grown was the famous Südtribune. It weaved it's magic on me, and when I got back to the UK, started going to the odd City game, which quickly became a season pass, and I've been black and amber ever since.
Was a bit of a tomboy at school and always loved playing football with the boys. Was better than a lot of them too! First team I supported as a kid was Spurs and I recall the FA cup classic v Man City (and replay) as one of the best games ever. Was 9 years old at the time. Remember my grandad telling me I should support my local team and always kept an eye on what City were doing. Have to admit i only went to Boothferry Park a handfull of times but do have fond memories of the place. Became a regular at the KC about 6 years ago after going to a couple of games and have been hooked ever since.
I'm just glad I ended up as a City fan thanks to my uncle taking me to a game, none of my family apart from him are football supporters and he is a casual football fan, though my brother is a Tigers supporter after I took him to see City in the early nineties, he still goes on about Leigh Jenkinson as his first football hero!
My great gran lived just outside Donny and Kevin Keegans family lived acoss a grassy park area from here, she used to tell em about how he kicked a ball about from dawn till dusk, i was hooked on football from then and according to my parents was football mad from a very early age, saw my first match aged 10 at Elland road, some of my dads workmates took me to see Leeds V Man utd, think it ended up 0-0, my first city mach was 82 and i,ve been going ever since. my son has been a city fan since birth and his 1st match was at 7 weeks, 2-2 v Port Vale at the KC,
the events which got me into football was my parents buying their first car which coincided with my dad not having to work Saturday afternoons on a regular basis. so we started going to football.
And what did you and all the others who go on about Maradona and others cheating think about Owen's blatant cheating to get a penalty in the World Cup finals (or clever play as the pundits, who are as hypocritical as the fans about these things put it)?
I started watching City because I was in the Centre of excellence so got a free pass for Boothferry every year. My favourite ever player in footbal is ironically Thierry Henry but it was Dennis Bergkamp who got me in to football
When I was seven I honestly believed I'd be a professional footballer when I was older. It's all I ever wanted to be. The booze, birds and flash cars are what did it for me.
The 1982 World Cup.. there were kids running around Leven Primary playground saying they were "Boniek".. can't spell it but he was a Polish forward who scored a hat-trick... then I started buying "Match" magazine in the mid 80s going to school on the 824 and 246 to Hull from Hornsea (Trinity House School..).. lo and behold one week the centre-spread was Hull City (Horton's team) and they were going well.. so I was hooked! it went on my wall.. my first favourite City player ever was Alex Dyer and then Garry Parker.. I got so into football that I even went to see Hornsea Town play sometimes..
I have no idea how I got into football. None of my family are interested in it, growing up in Skirlaugh most people were interested in rugby league, my school had no football team. But I've always loved it. The first player that I remember admiring as a kid is probably Dalglish
I'm the same, I'm not a football fan, but a Hull City supporter. I was brought up on RL but could only play RU when I joined the Army, could not do that so choose another field sport Hockey. 35 years of involvement and I retired. This led to Saturdays becoming free and I was given comp tickets. I got into watching City and fed up of sitting in different seats every time so I bought a season pass. I love the whole day, home and away, win lose or draw. I started to read HDM comments so that I could build up my knowledge, but soon became a poster. I wrote mainly about the emotions of supporting my home club. Its surprising how many think that they could play, manage or referee a game better than those on the pitch. I know that I can't and that gives me the freedom just to sit back and enjoy it. I drive nearly 250 miles up for home games and do the Southern away matches.
I remember that game. Waggy's first match for us and he scored a goal. If it had been now the match would have been postponed - the pitch was covered in snow.
