Most of us dont go back that far, as for myself the first season i was taken to Roker Park wasthe 54/55 season.
Seems fairly split.. But out of the last 6, only one has gone from SAFC to AFC....it seems lately that we take them from them.
I remember Ray Daniel. Known as the 'blue blood' of centre-halves in his time. Welsh international regular. In later years he took our penalties - no finesse, but no goalie had a chance, swi-sh and it was past you! He even played some games at centre-forward for us one season when we were pushed. Big mate of Shack's and a similar type of comedian. Joe Baker made football history. Centre-forward born in Liverpool, but got the chance to be Lawrie Reilly's reserve up at Hibs. It was a plum opportunity - the chance to learn how to be a centre-forward from Reilly was similar to learning from Lofthouse or Lawton. Moved to the first team when Lawrie retired about 1958/9 and scored a lot of goals. England were short of goals after Lofthouse retired, but they'd never picked a player who didn't play for an English club. It was thought Joe would never get his chance because of that, but he just kept banging them in. In the end, the FA had no choice. Joe became the first man to play for England whilst playing for a club outside the country. Some good names on that list.
I love Cuteybuns posts... Always informative, and thought out...unlike mine. How he remembers these things, i don't know, must just be a football lover... Even though he's very old...
Hey, I'm nowt but a little hoodie yet! But thanks for your comment anyway, Commachio. Seriously, it helps when you were there and saw these things. I mean, when Stanley Matthews stands in the cold to sign your autograph book, you don't ever, ever forget that. Same with Ray Daniel, Lawrie Reilly &co. My interests had moved more towards girls by the time Joe Baker came here, so I didn't get that one. Still, it was a landmark achievement for him.
haha love it... my memory is blurred, born on a diet of SAFC...helps a lot mind living round the corner and having family work there....but still a blur from the early days... i love the way you recollect things....wish i could...
