I thought Rangers were called 'Huns' due to a time when they wrecked Birmingham and were referred to as 'Huns' by some official down there. How is that sectarian?
Actually I found it (it was Wolverhampton): in 1961, rangers travelled to wolverhampton to play wolverhampton wanderers in the European cup winners cup. true to form, their supporters ran riot through the town destroying everything in their path. in an article appearing in the English press shortly afterwards they were described as 'coming across the border like marauding huns'. thus, a humorous accurate and nonsectarian term of endearment was created for the rangers. Wavetower is one of his companies. Is it secured on Wavetower? Wavtower's assets are, let's see, oh yeah, the club. We're seeing the latest stage of the managing of expectations. First it is more money to spend - front loaded warchest and that pish. Then it is difficult times but we have advice that we're going to win. Then its we're talking to HMRC. Then its a £10m black hole and costs must be cut. Now its administration might be best all round even if we win the tax case. Let me tell you what comes next. We go into administration, probably before the tax case decision comes out, and that is the line - that we have to get closure. More players are released. We take a 10 point penalty and we limp to the end of the season in administration and being laughed at. Suitably encouraging noises are made about raising new investment and finally getting out from under the debt burden, and about agreeing a CVA to come out of administration to allow the squad to be rebuilt in the summer. Dundee and Livingstoin are cited as examples. In the meantime the tax case is decided. HMRC also submit their claims for this and anything else they say is outstanding to the administrator (and there are persistent rumours about arrears of VAT and PAYE). Their claim includes a penalty assessment on the tax bill. The administrator will have to go to another tribunal if he wants to challenge that. No one can afford the time that will take so the administrator sucks it up. Whyte proposes a pennies in the pound deal. Graciously says he'll take a haircut on what he is owed (conveniently forgetting that he never put any of his own money in to begin with and the starting balance has been grossly inflated by interest and charges). HMRC however have considerably more than 25% of the debt by value and so are in a position to block the CVA, and predictably they tell him to do one. Whyte bleats in the media about an anti Rangers agenda, and how you'd think HMRC would rather get some money than none. He blames the old board the BBC and the Daily Record. After that token exercise the club goes into liquidation and a new company is formed to buy Ibrox and the intellectual property rights. The new company is then scrabbling about cap in hand sucking up to the other clubs to go easy on it and give it a league place - any league place. Meanwhile Whyte takes the entire proceeds of the liquidation as secured creditor leaving HMRC getting hee haw and sails off into the sunset with a big wedge in his arse pocket. That makes grim reading mate but I think you maybe correct, time to get our heads out the sand bears, things are going to get worse before they get better. The only way out will be for the fans to dig deep.
When the "huns" as the Rangers fans were known in the Midlands in 1961, was that the first instance of foreign supporters rioting, luckily there were few if any police-women on duty then. Would those thugs have been released by the time they blitzed Manchester in 2008. My memories of the 60's was all peace flowers and love, well up to the late 60's.
