Have we missed a trick here?

I appreciate that money is an issue, but I can't see him being too much plus Hess is talking about bringing someone in anyway.

Thoughts as to why he didn't go for him?

hess infact implied, he wasn't interested for the time being that fry had the trial, but could well have a look later !

the only case thats closed is hess missing out on a decent defender who's a free and also a young leftsided quality player.

and yes the case is certainly closed on us...yet again !!!

BSG i read the same article you must have, and obviously from that we have decided not to take him. Therefore it is not 'case closed' as i'm starting a general discussion to get people's thoughts on why Hess didn't think we would suit us, when in my opinion, he is a cheao and very good defender, which we seem to lack at present!

agree totally with what you say gills-man-ant-dog, we have missed a treat of a player here, one that was needed and i sometimes question the managers thinking.

yes he's got a couple/three decent signings in, but sometimes he's clueless.

example: andy white and stefen payne, who he said could be gems in the making...look where they went.

some won't like certain comments and won't hear a bad word said, well we all have an opinion on whats happened since hess took over and how this season is panning out, but something's i must say are weird to say the least in how they've been handled or spoken about by our management!

Sorry Ant, thought you meant what the reason was why didn't sign him, not our opinion on whether we should have signed him....

I think Fry would have been great, he is young and he will get even better, him and Richards would be my pairing at the back or I would have gone with Richards and Essam and Fry at left back and drop Martin if we had signed him, but we haven't, just have to get over it.

    That's ok BSG!

I'm a bit dissapointed he hasn't come in, I think he would have done well but maybe Connor Essam will be a lot better than we're thinking. Without a doubt the defence needs improving though, either by bringing someone in or better coaching.

In regards to Hessy, we'll judge him at the end of the season, but I don't think we will make the play-offs, therefore something will have to happen if im right.

Given we have such a big squad already we need to operate a one in one out policy and only bring in players better than we already have... does Fry fit that bill I think not

If there is one clear lesson from league 2 it is that clubs who gain promotion using loanees come straight back down. You can justify a loanee to cover, say the Birchall situation but thats all. So a sensible strategy now is to select the 15 best players to see us through until the end of the season and just concentrate on getting them to play well. No chopping and changing. If that does not work by April give the kids a chance and reflect at season end. Then it might be all change, but not yet and no loan signings to cause any more chaos.

So are you saying that he should stick with the squad that won us a total of 3 points in January? The attack is now much improved compared to earlier in the season, and the midfield would be OK if he didn't have to keep playing midfield players in defensive positions becuse he's so short of option in defence. I think that Essam will be playing tomorrow, and hope he's given a decent run to help him find his feet at this level. If he's not going to go to the loan market for whatever reason the time to bring in the younger players has to be now, as the ones that have been playing just aren't doing it. No point in waiting until May when we're 10th and 10 points off the play off places.

I think I would go for the squad (minus Nouble of course) that played from the beginning of November up to Christmas and did not lose a game and knocked out two league 1 teams from the Cup after being drawn away. That group clearly oozed quality and the hysterical reaction of wholesale changes after a couple of bad results rather than trying to understand why good players suddenly fail to perform reflects complete stupidity.
It seems even more stupid to throw in kids when there are still good prospects of making the playoffs. If that prospect recedes then it is fine to blood the youngsters but for the moment they should be coming on for the last 15-20 mins in games like Hereford at home. Starting kids at somewhere like Burton is unlikely to be a success.
A second mystery for me is how on earth has Essam managed to jump the queue? What has happened that people see him as a natural choice when he has been playing inconspicuously at lowly Darford. Callum Davies appeared a far brighter prospect as central defender and has done nothing wrong. It seems to me that some shallow thinking is going on. Gills have the luxury of one of the strongest squads and the issue has been inconsistency of performance not shortage of ability. The obvious solution is consistency of selection (which would have been helped no end by avoiding suspensions and players staying fit). Common sense seems never to be tolerated at Priestfield.

I think it is the case that Essam has been great out on loan and that we have not seen much of Davies, but I think Davies would be OK.

would of liked to of seen davies & essam in and around the team more before now, getting a chance to play and build there confidence & experience.
most managers seem to go down the using more attacking players, because obviously thats what tends to bring an outcome at the end of a match, which if we look at hess's subs, most...if not all have been two or three more forward players getting those minutes rather than any defender!

davies when he had his only chance did very well against crewe even though we know he was dismissed shortly after starting to settle into his game...yet no appearances since then...shame!

just hope essam & evans get there chances now...which is easy to say in hindsight after whats happened of late, but it just show's a change or two has been needed and hopefully that positive change starts with our young crop!!!

also see jonathan fortune 31 y/o defender is to be given a run out next week against chelsea...better than matt fry...i say not!

even though fry's gone to bradford, i still say other than jack payne, we've missed out on a player to build a side around at gillingham fc.....but we try again another time and see what fortune brings regards another so called gem!!!
