Mark Hughes is planning a review of QPR’s scouting set-up.

Hughes brought in his own coaching team when he took over as manager at Loftus Road last month and has hinted that he may now make changes in other areas of the club.

“We’re in the process of looking at what we’ve got and making judgements,” he told West London Sport.

“Obviously the scouting side is important and if we feel that’s underfunded then that’s an area we’ll have to improve.

“For the time being I’ve been getting by on using my own contacts to a large extent. Moving forward it’s something we’ll have to look at in greater detail.”

Should be the first order of the day when our place in the Premier League is secured.

What's there to look at? We don't have any (scouting apparatus).

Why do you say that, when we must have brought in more new players in the last 2, perhaps 3, transfer windows than most Clubs in the League? I think Mick Jones was taking care of this before.

My point excactly. This is a separate department with many involved who's specialised on it. This is not something that should be assigned to an already overworked assistant manager. Relying on one persons opinion will only bring one type of players to the club, and if that fails the club fails.

As Sparky points out, he's been getting on by his own contacts during January.

Mmh, lets hope we will not be employing too many people, I think they normally use local scouts / contacts. As we have brought in so many, and also quite a variety of players the last year it seems like we been doing pretty good to me.

Don't forget, scouting is often more about finding young new players. We haven't done a lot of that in the past, with only Troy Hewitt coming to mind at the moment (and his contract hasn't done anything for us yet).

What we've had during the last five years have nothing to do with scouting.

With Flabio we used his "contacts" and got the likes of the Pelican, Alberti, Ledesma (one good game though). The rest was from Paladini and his friends (agents) selling us the left overs at inflated wages and agent fees.

Then came Warnock. No scouting there either, he brought in his trusted players he had worked with in the past (succesfully), and some others with a good Championship pedigree. He was going down the same path this summer, but Tango & Cash would not invest, hence Graham, Morrison, Machail-Smith going elsewere. We ended up with aprox ten frantic days after TF's takeover and what did we get, yes Barton and SWP among others. I dare anyone on here to tell me they've been scouted before signed! If the club had a scouting network we most certainly wouldn't have signed them for the fees and wages touted around, there would have been players lined up that was scouted for a long period of time and made sure they fitted in with the rest of the team which is the whole point of having that kind of a network.

This doesn't necessary have to be expensive for the club. A scouting staff of 2-4 on permanent contracts with a cheif scout running it and reporting directly to the manager. Most scouts work on a freelance basis and will be hired for spesific missions with time scale and wage set in advance. If we hadn't signed Barton and SWP we would already have money enough to run this sort of operation for two years for the money a scouting apparatus could have saved us!
