Spurs are currently in 3rd place in the Premier League with 50 points, while Newcastle are in 5th place on 42 points. This will be the 148th time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in February 1905 with Newcastle drawing 1-1 at White Hart Lane before winning the replay at St James' Park 4-0. To date, the clubs have met 9 times in the FA Cup. The clubs met for the first time in the Football League in November 1909 in the First Division with Newcastle winning 1-0 at St James' Park and completing the 'double' over Spurs with a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane in March 1910. Tottenham's first win over Newcastle came in a First Division match at White Hart Lane in November 1912 with Jimmy Cantrell scoring the only goal of the match. There were further meetings in the First Division up to season 1933-34 with honours generally pretty even. An FA Cup 4th round match in January 1935 was won 2-0 by Spurs at White Hart Lane with George Hunt (Spurs' record goalscorer until Bobby Smith) scoring both goals. The next 12 meetings between the clubs came in the Second Division of the Football League either side of World War Two from 1935-36 to 1947-48. These dozen matches were the only League games contested between Spurs and Newcastle outside the Top Flight of English Football. The 1950-51 season saw Spurs win their first Football League Championship and in the process they did the 'double' over Newcastle winning 7-0 at home and 1-0 away. The 70,336 spectators at White Hart Lane for that emphatic 7-0 win were the largest crowd at any Spurs v Newcastle fixture in history. Spurs beat Newcastle United in the 1952 Charity Shield 2-1 at White Hart Lane with Les Bennett and Peter 'Spud' Murphy scoring the goals which won the silverware. The first Football League Cup meeting came in the Semi-Finals in January 1976 with John Pratt scoring the winning goal at White Hart Lane in the first leg but Newcastle winning 3-1 at St James' Park despite a Don McAllister goal to advance to the Wembley Final. Newcastle United, along with West Ham United, were the first clubs to be promoted to the Premier League for the 1993-94 season and Spurs won the first match against Newcastle in the competition 1-0 away at St James' Park with a Teddy Sheringham goal. The Magpies had their revenge at White Hart Lane in December with a 2-1 win. An FA Cup Semi-Final at Old Trafford in April 1999 was won 2-0 by Newcastle after extra time. Newcastle lost their Premier League status at the end of the 2008-09 season but won promotion at the first attempt managed by former Spurs player and assistant manager Chris Hughton. Hughton was sacked under contraversial circumstances in December 2010 and Alan Pardew was appointed as Newcastle's new manager. Last season's reverse fixture at White Hart Lane on 28th December 2010 was won by Spurs 2-0 with second-half goals from Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale. The return match at St James' Park in January 2011 finished in a 1-1 draw after Fabricio Coloccini had put Newcastle ahead with a fine strike after 59 minutes only for Aaron Lennon to score deep into injury time to salvage a point for Spurs. During the summer, Spurs signed former Newcastle player (2005-07) Scott Parker from West Ham United. The reverse fixture at St. James' Park in October 2011 resulted in a 2-2 draw. Rafael van der Vaart opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 40 minutes. Demba Ba pulled Newcastle level three minutes into the second half but Jermain Defoe's 68th minute goal looked like securing all three points. Substitute Shola Ameobi scored a late equaliser for Newcastle. Former Newcastle United striker Louis Saha joined Spurs on loan from Everton during the January 2012 transfer window. Tottenham Hotspur have won 61 of the 147 matches played so far with Newcastle United winning 54 and the remaining 32 games drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United Matches 1905-2012 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Newcastle.... Start of the season I would have said this was a banker for 3 points (even if the Geordies have been a bit of a bogey team for us over the years) but their form this season and their new Senegalese assassin strike force means we'll have to play really well to come away with the three points. Presume they'll still be without Tiote (ACoN) and isn't Cabaye suspended? Two top midfield players there so hopefully we can boss the midfield and make things click from there. Going for 1-0. Tight game. Cheers again 6061
Ryan Taylor should be out of this match as well, along with Leon Best. As others have said, we'll have to be at top form - and hopefully get some of our injured players back (particularly people like VdV and Lennon) to have a decent chance of 3 pts. I'd like Kaboul back as well - Ba's movement up front and his excellent form are definitely gonna be issues for us.
We won't know that ourselves till teamsheet time, so your guess is as good as ours, expect all reports to say doubtful, its Harry's way.
This will be a really tough game for us, and if we got a point i'd be over the moon. Yeh we are on a good run, and should go in confident, but you have played some fantastic football this season and deserve to be right up there. The big worry for me is our full-backs coping with Bale and Lennon (if fit) Simpson is alright, he tries hard but I dunno he just doesn't have the quality i don't think to be a top right back. Santon is young, and learning, and going forward is terrific, but this will be a big big test for him. Also we are without Cabaye, and Tiote, who are both big players for us. To be fair Guthrie has come in and been outstanding, but obviously him and Perch are going to have their hands full with Parker and Modric. You will probably win 2-0, 3-0 but I hope we do come and have a go. We've got nothing to lose, and have a strikeforce that is potentially as good as any in the league. Anyways lets hope its a good game, full of goals, which it always seems to be when we play you.
This match will go one of two ways. Hard fought draw OR you will steam roll us. We play a high defensive line which a lot of your players will love!
Newcastle have been written off a couple of times this season, yet they are still up there and fighting for a CL place. I would love it, love it if they got fourth spot to our third. It would be really good for the league and it would show the pundits lack of vision once again. It's going to be a hard game and very difficult to predict. COYS
Pardew's done a fantastic job this season and I think that Ashley's done the club far more good than he's credited for, despite some embarrassing decisions at times. The finances that he inherited were sending the club down the path of Leeds, as far as I could see. Tiote and Cabaye missing the game is enormously important, but we need to make sure that we take advantage of their absence. Modric needs to play a deeper role than the one that he was deployed in against Liverpool and we need to get some support to Adebayor, assuming he starts. Unfortunately this probably means that Livermore may have to drop to the bench, which is a little unfair on the lad, but the needs of the team come first. Hopefully we'll have a few more options for this game, plus a manager. Always helps, that. Good luck to the Geordies after this game, though. They've worked really hard for their manager this season and deserve to be where they are at the moment. Them and Swansea deserve all of the praise that they're receiving.
Cabaye's injury has buggered my fantasy team of late, as he was always good for at least four points every week. However, I wouldn't say they were weakened by the absense of cabaye and Tiote, as they've kept the momentum going without them, sort of like how Everton did when losing Gravesen mid-season but still finishing fourth. If we cobble together eleven players like we did against Liverpool we'd be handing over a lot of initiative, which we don't want to do with Ba in form and Cisse seems to be slotting in remarkably well. Ade shouldn't be isolated up front like he was at Klanfield - but the options at present (as in God knows what VDV, Lennon or Defoe's status is at this time) is either Ade with Saha up front with Lancaster on the bench, or Ade with Niko playing behind him and Gio or (more likely) Rose on the right. I expect at least one of them to be passed fit for the game, though - although maybe starting on the bench.
The 4-4-2 with Kranjcar on the right (provisionally) worked well against Liverpool at WHL, Croydon. Not sure that we can hope for the same tactical ineptitude and rash tackling from Newcastle, though.
I'm expecting one columnist to imply Ade and Saha can't play together up front, despite there being no evidence to back this opinion up because they never have until now, so why make the presumption ahead of this weekend's game?
I would like Toon to get fourth if we got third, but TBH, all I want from Saturday is three points, no injuries or suspensions.
Its important to make sure Ba and this Cisse don't get any service, then it doesn't matter about their form, quite possible with Tiote and Cabaye missing. The 2 replacements may just lack a bit to keep up with our MF, and with every team so far's method of stopping Bale by hacking him, we should get a few free-kicks....oh no!
