Reg mentioning the lad reminds him of Tueart, made me think of a conversation I had with some mates over bevies Sunday.

Nope we weren't watching the Skunks, someone shouted through to us the skunks have scored!
There was a unanimous "Who gives a ****?" :p
These are old school supporters most of us go back to the dark days before 73, but always stuck it out.
We were talking about McClean and who he reminded us of, Tueart of course was mentioned along with Micky Gray, Arca and lots of others were mentioned.
In a lull I mentioned what I have said on here, he is like the energizer bunny, someone else said more like Nijinsky !
It was like a light bulb for some of us, Colin Bell!
I have to say I haven't seen anyone else with an engine like Bell.
So Bell got the vote by the majority of us, what do you think?

George Mulhall also got a mention, but as there was only one old get could remember him clearly, he was shouted down. He was adamant on his stance mind said they were both tough and strong. :p One for the oldies on here to confirm?

Well as I've already laid my cards on the table on a previous thread I will stick with Tueart...In my opinion Bell was a fantastic midfielder, but not an out and out winger like Tueart and now McClean is..I'm not old enough to comment on Mulhall...

Aye we drifted well away from the wing Reg.
We were rolling out everyone we could think of with such stamina and determination, who also had skill.

I think this lad McLean is a few inches taller than George Mulhall ever was.

However he does physically remind me of Chris Waddle with his gangly runs and it's a coincidence that they were both (i) picked up cheaply and (ii) got their breaks relatively late in life (at least for a professional footballer).

Now that would be some achievement if he could end up half as good as the Waddler!!

Couldn't resist doing a search, canny read on Mulhall.

http://www.football-england.com/george_mulhall.html

By rights I should remember him more from the 68 69 season, to my shame I don't my only excuse is his career with us was winding down then.
Seems he hated Leeds as much as us supporters too. <ok>

Snippet from the above link.

"Mulhall’s consistency, and durability, were important factors in Sunderland managing to maintain their place in the top flight. With no obvious stars the club relied to a large extent on hard work and team spirit to keep themselves out of trouble. Mulhall was a winger who did not mind pitching in to help the team and his eye for a goalscoring opportunity was also vital to the teams’ cause."

McClean is physically stronger than any wingers I've seen in recent years.

I said it the first time I say him but this lad is a striker not a winger. He doesn't have a wingers trick as such but he has the desire to get in the box and shoot.

He is a naturally good striker of the ball, canny in the air and fast as ****.

You heard it here first. Lol

Hmmm I recall us buying this big lump of a lad as a striker, wasn't that good so stuck him at centre half the rest is history.

Name that centre half? (like it's a hard question.)

Well the only similarities to Arca are that they both have 2 legs, 2 arms and a head. They are polar opposites in terms of style, attributes and physique.

Arca was immensely skillful but slow and ponderous. McClean lacks such fine control of the ball but is powerful, pacy and direct.

I know Julio was worshipped and I appreciated his skills but he was one of the most overrated players in our recent history IMO. The number of goals he scored or directly influenced was nothing like the rate McClean has shown so far.

McClean is like Steve Guppy was for MON's Leicester. One trick, one main tactical idea: get past the full-back and get a cross in. Like someone said earlier (Syd?) he is one of the most effective players in the league right now. Julio, although easy on the eye, was one of the least effective and influential players.

True and I did like him, I just thought with his talent he should have had more impact upon games. He was a legend for staying when we got relegated though. Frustratingly, I always thought why don't we play him more centrally and when he went to Boro he was playing centre mid within weeks. Maybe it wasn't his fault, bless him!

That's a great comparison. Let's hope he has a career like Waddle.
