you should put a some i do, some I dont option as the Lotus one looks good but the Ferrari and FI ones look bad
If I was a platypus, I'd be calling my lawyers. Actually though, I'm not sure whether it's the 'bill' part of the nose that I find most offensive or the lumpy step portion. In fact, I think it's that the whole ensemble seems out of proportion with the rest of the cars; visually, it just seems unbalanced.
I don't like it from an aesthetic point of view, if that's what you're asking, technological wise, a different matter, all natures fastest animals have a 'step'.
The step-up is pretty grim but by the time the RB8 was unveiled today I'd become inured to its grotesque aspect. These things are designed by far superior brains to mine but I'll go out on a limb and offer an uneducated assessment of some of the points that stand out. I think the Lotus knuckle is the most aesthetically pleasing implementation because I equate smooth curves and gentle gradients to the flow of air over a surface. Ferrari's interpretation I really don't understand because it looks like the block of granite before the sculptor begins work. Red Bull's solution appears to be to put a carbon fibre windsock on top of the car and I don't see what positive effect this can have even compared to the Ferrari lego roof slope, which is at least making an effort to push the air over the car. I can only imagine that the RB8's exquisite nose, curved beautifully in almost every plane, is going to direct the air over the bulkhead and the slot is simply going to gather up some of the turbulence. McLaren appear to have tried to apply a pre-2012 solution and avoided the disruptive step-up but at what cost? I think McLaren may have bigger drag problems to concern themselves with, anyway. As for the actual nose, the platypus design looks mediocre to me. A flat surface can't do much to shape and redirect the airflow. There's a nice variety of solution, though - Ferrari's square approach, Sauber's round edge, Lotus's arrowhead, Caterham's and Force India's bets hedger... I don't like the hump and I think McLaren has interpreted the 550mm height limit best in terms of redirecting the air over the car but I think Red Bull has the prettiest nose of the humpbacks.
I think some versions are worse than others, Renaults and Red Bulls are better looking than others; such as Ferrari's which is quite frankly hideous. Interesting to see what the vent in the RB8 does!
The RB8 looks the best out of the Rhino crew. Ofcourse the Mclaren is by far the best looking car. However, looks can be deceiving....
We should get you a bell for around your neck so that we know when you're coming. For now, perhaps you should shout 'Unclean!! Unclean!' whenever you get near us.
Although I think all the noses are hideous, it may be something that everyone will get used to in time, and maybe even get to like the look of; a bit like when they introduced the wider front wings, I thought they were equally hideous looking at first. But as mentioned above, there's something about the rhino noses that just doesn't look right.
I have to say, I am getting used them already. That's not to say that I like them exactly and some are uglier than others, mentioning no names. But contrast them with the McLaren and there's no contest: it's a thing of such beauty, from above it looks like a Vulcan bomber flying backwards. As I've said before though, there are no points for aesthetics and it remains to be seen in McLaren's case whether beauty is as beauty does.
