would 7th get us into europe if liverpool win the carling cup? the way things are going we have more chance of catching liverpool than newcastle. Not saying we will but we're only 5 points behind the scousers

    I think

Top 4 in the Champions League

    5th Europa League

Winner of the FA and Carling Cup = Europa League

I know for the FA Cup if the winners already are a top 5 in the league, then the runner up in the cup gets the nod, I believe it would be the same for the Carling Cup as well. if both winner and runner up are in the top 5 from both cups, then it goes to 6th/7th in the League

Then you have a place for fair play usually.

    Top 4 get Champions league.
    5-7 get Europa league.

You win the Carling Cup & you get Europa league; if you get INTO the final of the FA cup you get Europa league.

So if Liverpool won Carling cup, they'd get Europa meaning 5-6th place will only get Europa league. Same situation if Cardiff win it.

Unless Liverpool get Champions league & win the Carling cup then 7th place will get Europa league.

So if that happened (which is unlikely) we would then need two top 4 teams to get into the FA cup final (or ourselves) & to finish 7th for Europa league.

So in summary: Our best hope of Europe is through the FA cup

An extra spot can be allocated for fair play. That won't be us though

European football would be a nice bonus but, I'm not sure we have the personnel to cope with europe and the PL. Doing it via the cup is our best bet anyway.

If we were in Europa we would have players knocking on the door rather than the other way around lets face it the top 5 can only name 25 players each, what do all the players do that have not been bought by the top 5,.... look for the next best thing.......it could be us by the end of the season....... and will be next year

If FA Cup final is Chelsea v Tottenham, then it goes to 6th. If the Cup final is Tottenham v Everton and Everton aren't in Europe, then they automatically get it whether they win it or not.

Runner up of Carling Cup never gets Europe unless via the league, so that one drops a place as well if winner already in Europe.

Thought it was only the top 3 qualified for the CL proper the 4th placed team have to play qualifying rounds.

From what I have read if Liverpool with the CC and finish in the top 5 in the league then their CC Europa league spot would go to the 6th place in the league.

Then if the above happens and

2 of the top 5 get into the FA cup final say Spurs and Chelsea the FA cup Europa league spot would go to 7th in the league.

In short if we finish 7th we would have a chance but if we finished 6th or got into the FA cup final there is a very good chance.

For this season, I'm not too bothered about Europe either way TBH. It would be nice to get into the CL in time for my year abroad in 3 years tho! (Real Madrid v Sunderland... :D:D:D)

Nearly - the FA Cup and Carling Cup both hold 1 place only - and the Carling Cup spot is only for the winners - runners up do not qualify even if their opposition is in the top 5.

Top 4 of the League = Champions :League
5th in the League = UEFA Cup
FA Cup Winners = UEFA Cup
If FA Cup winners are in the top 5, Runners up get into UEFA cup
IF Both finalists are in the top 5, extra league place awarded (6th spot)
Carling Cup Winners = UEFA Cup
If Winners are in the top 5 (or win the FA Cup) - Extra place awarded to the league (6th or 7th depending on above)

Marcus seems to be spot on here but one little spanner in the works. If the league finished as it is now and Arsenal were to win the Champions League they would go into the Champions League next year as champions and the 4th placed team Chelsea would drop into the Europa League i.e taking the league spot 5th. Europe then would look like this.

    Manchester City - Champions League
    Manchester United - Champions League
    Tottenham Hotspur - Champions League
    Arsenal - Champions League
    Chelsea - Europa League
Carling Cup Winners - Europa League
FA Cup Winners - Europa League

Based on the above scenario and as league stands at present the only way 5th placed in the premier league never mind 6th could get into the Europa League is if Tottenham played Chelsea in the FA Cup Final (as these teams would have already qualified for Europe) or a place being awarded through the fair play league. Now of course if Tottenham were to play Chelsea in the cup final and we got awarded a place through the fair play league 5th and 6th would get into Europe on the above scenario. Complicated aint it

But what about this lets say the top 4 stays as it is and thats how the season ends and Arsenal dont win the Champions League we could have the following

Manchester City Manchester United Tottenham and Chelsea - Champions League
If Liverpool finish 5th and win the Carling Cup 6th placed team get into Europe.
If that 6th place happens to be Arsenal and they or Tottenham Chelsea or Liverpool meet in the FA Cup Final then 7th place would get a Europa League spot
Add a place awarded for fair play 8th could quite easily get into the Europa League.

So as everything stands at the moment we could have one suituation where the 5th team in the premier league doesnt get into Europe and quite possibly a Championship side does or another situation where 8th gets into Europe. All very complicated but in reality it all comes down who wins what rather than places awarded.

Arsenal could be in the Champions League next season by virtue of winning it this year but might not be good enough to qualify for Europe through the league or cups. Time we went back to the old days of qualifying for Europe.

On the other hand Sunderland at this very moment could be sitting on a Europa League Spot.

And how about this for a mind boggling thought. The four teams who qualify for the Champions League fail at the group stages and end up in the Europa League. Could eventually have 8 teams in the Europa League.

What happens if Newcastle finish 6th but Sunderland get to the final against a team already in Europe?

I'm afraid I have a rather jaundiced view of the 2nd best Euro competition. Frankly I do not think the financial rewards are there to justify having a bigger squad to cope with all the games, the result is more often than not league forms suffers. I am not absolutely sure but a Villa fan told me MoN is not impressed by the Euro and often put a sort of reserve team out. So if that was us today, it is likely in the early stages of the comp players like Sess, Frazier and McClean would not be picked. Also do not get me started about the fact that Champion League drop outs drop in the Euro,

If Liverpool win the league cup both S'land and N'castle would be in Europe.

If Cardiff win the league cup and liverpool finish top 5 Sunderland would be in Europe and N'castle would not.

Agree with this. **** money, **** teams, the early rounds are like watching Sunday league. Turning it into a group tournament has really ****ed it up for me as it means an extra 20 odd games!

Mind you it would spice it up if they offered the winners a spot in the cl.
