Super Kevin and young Matty. SKP scored a trade mark beauty, a chested down wonderfully taken volley and Matty scored another brace and two top finishes as well. We would do well to keep tabs on the younger version for the summer recruitment campaign imo but its great to see our former legend still doing the business in such style. I still have a bit of a soft spot for Blackpool, not just because of SKP but I genuinely like Holloway. Would be good to see him back in the EPL.
Totally agree. TVI has been talking the lad up since he gave us a right seeing to at the SOL last season, and the lad looks like he really has something. The 2 goals yesterday were superbly done, and he's been doing it all season (including 2 hat-tricks from midfield). SKP, what can you say, that was typical of his whole career, so utterly deliberate, calculated and accurate, what a ****ing boy, and what a tragic waste (sad to admit), that he didn't join a really top club a couple of years earlier and form a partnership with Poppins for England. They would have been the perfect complimentary strikeforce.
Got absolutely no time for Holloway but SKP has the best ball striking technique I can rememberfrom an SAFC player. Look how composed he was and how he just timed the strike. There was no lash at the ball, just about pure contact. Cest, think back to his goal away at QPR when he volleyed home on the run. Yesterday was yet more vintage Phillips.
Delighted for Kevin. The old bugger just won't lie down, will he? One of the biggest travesties of the last fifty years is that this man never got ninety minutes for England. Disgraceful. He deserved better.
There will never be another footballer that goes by the name of Phillips, as good as SKP. What he got now...in the last 4-5 games from the bench?
My favourite Phillips goal was at Hillsborough, we toild for about 80 mins without scoring, then nicked 2 late (and fully deserved) goals, Phillips scoring with an outrageous outside of the boot chip that never got nearly enough credit!
Can't find the Wednesday goal, sadly, but here's a nice, short 1 minute reminder of why he's the greatest most of us have ever seen in the shirt. Over to you Sess.... Monmush. I have said many times that not only is he the best striker I've ever seen in our colours, he is also the best pound for pound footballer too. His technique, touch, awareness, passing, volleying, left foot, right foot, heading and tackling was of the highest quality. Simply the best football player in the last 40 years for me to play for Sunderland.
On that vid Cest, there's a tiny selection, but they show a man who had everything. That chest an volley goal away to City, incredible. The Barnsley and Liverpool goals, running past defenders at speed, and shooting from range. His very first for us, rebound, swivel, shoot. He was ****ing fantastic, in every way. England may have won a tournament with him & Shearer together, they were both unplayable. If it was indeed Shearer who prevented it, then shame on him, but I imagine that's just a vicious rumour. I will be eternally thankful to Phillips (and Quinn, Nicky, Mickey Gray) that after 15 years of watching ****e, I finally got to see some real class (Marco excluded!) How many goals did Mickey Gray make for him, BTW, another proper club legend.
We should definitely sign Matt Phillips! Skillfull, strong(ish!), quick and scores goals. Yes please Him or Hoillet for a free in the summer
Phillips should be knighted when he retires, exemplary player and person, not a whiff of scandal and still dedicated to the game
Word for word exactly how i describe SKP, only difference i would say 30 years not 40, im not as old as you, you old bugger lol
I used the 40 years for effect kidda but the truth is I have only attended 35 years in person. Poetic licence maybe but It's still a helluva long time.
