Was quite disappointed with the attendance last night - I understand hard times etc. but it seems that people still have that little negative thing about them that we may just **** it up. Let's get the SoL full again and buzzing - performances like that will certainly help. Was looking on Twitter last night and there were hundreds of Newcastle fans slating our attendance - 34000 odd! (EmptySeats was the hashtag) stupid thing is they slag off the ones that actually go to the match because of the ones trhat don't - we're still the 7th best supported club in the country (with only 6 of the top 7 above us) and that includes the Bruce part of the season.
What have they had to put up with for the last 20 years or so? PL challenges, Champions League, the Entertainers tag etc. Compared to our countless relegations, record low points tallies. Its amazing we get as many as we do. Even after relegation, just look at they are bouncing back despite having an 'atrocious' owner. They are in no position to criticise. We were getting bigger crowds when we were in the Championship, battling relegation. Simply, our attendance does not reflect the football on offer but the circumstances at large. Thats not to say how we are playing does not have an affect but it is only seconday and no where near as significant. As far as I'm concerned its nothing to worry about, unless we were say comfortably in a Champions League position.
A big problem is habit, when you stop going you get into the habit of staying in or going to the pub, layers of clothing, traffic, parking, cost all ar put offs. Same way I fancied watching on TV last night, all warm and cozy but again habit, I have been doing it a long time and TV is just not the same, I know what I'm missing so I may moan at times, scream never again, but I know I will be there.
MARKUSBLACKCAT"Was looking on Twitter last night and there were hundreds of Newcastle fans slating our attendance - ................." Who cares what THEY think?
The attendance thing only comes up when we are doing well. When I see it, I read it as a defensive tactic from them, so I enjoy it. The attendances will gradually grow, let's just be happy that the team is performing, and concentrate on catching Arsenal next. (sounds good don't it..)
It doesn't bother me but it appeared that, even though they got a good away vidtory, all they had to talk about was us!!!
Considering everything I don't think the attendance was that bad. I can just imagine someone thinking, a few days ago, I may go to the game against Norwich. But come the day it is cold (although it wasn't as cold as I thought was going to be although perhaps the performance kept me warm) and the game is on TV so they think maybe I'll stay at home next to the fire. I feel sure if the lads keep performing like that the attendances will start to creep up.
I was disappointed with the attendance and I do think there's a good 5-10k sitting at home who used to go, and use any excuse not to go. I understand finance/geography preventing people but that's not the case. I heard a bunch of people spout the line 'Im not going till Bruce has gone' have they been back? Have they f**k. All that said there was still more there than at any other game last night I believe
You lads can't make your mind up. One minute we're a laughing stock suggesting we've had to put up with plenty, the next we've had nothing but good times? Which is it? Support from either side will always take the opportunity to have a little fish when eithers attendance sinks. Just the way it is. As for bigger crowds battling relegation in the Championship? Bigger crowds than who? Newcastle? Don't be silly. Your crowds are down because of a hangover from having to watch a man without a clue slowly hang himself. The numbers will go up if O'Neill keeps winning. Both clubs are incredibly well supported and do incredubly well in this regard regardless of what is going on at the club. Thisi s evidenced by the relegations both teams have experienced, the poor managers and owners both have had, yet both clubs still maintain healthy 30-35k plus support.
I was actually just about to post an article about this, so glad I scrolled down the page. Great win and I'll say it again, what a player Sessegnon is! The crowd did look pretty shocking on telly, I was going to ask if it was just because there was a lack of fans behind the goal in particular or if quite a few didn't bother with that game in particular as it was hardly a 'top class' fixture (much like us V Blackburn)?
Jesus, behind the goal where Campbell scored that's the away end. To their credit Norwich brought up double what I thought they would. Eight hundred and odd turned up from Norfolk which isn't a good place to get to on a weekend nevermind a freezing cold night game on the tele when tickets would have been bought just after Christmas. As for our end, I don't think the lower tiers which is what is shown on the tele are bad at all, the majority (Barring the South stand) is normally 90% full but the North stand upper is always empty unless we play Newcastle.
Well from actual personal experience, my son's mates who he has dragged along with him in the past just don't have the money. One of my best friends 40 plus years as a supporter (I don't think we missed a match unless we were working away.) the majority as a season ticket holder, can't afford to go at the present time, and no he isn't sitting in a pub he can't afford that either! He doesn't have Sky or internet access either. I think some on here are underestimating, just how tight things are, for people on lower income budgets. I agree with BB too, when the Mags start focussing on our crowds, it is because they are getting worried.
Our own crowds, silly. I was saying that relatively you lot have been more successful than we have over that time period. And that you have had some very good times to enjoy. Capish? The fact you have nothing tangible to hangover us despite this though, could be argued is what makes a laughing stock, while we on the other hand have simply been woeful over that time period.
My bad it just didn't make sense to me. We have been relatively more successful in the more recent history of the two clubs but at the end of the day we've still won **** all and we have now been lumbered with Jabba the Hut who, to be quite honest, has taken us to hell and back with his football nous. (The penny seems to have finally dropped there at least) as for laughing stock, its not about winning something that we've had levelled at us down the years, its the odious owners we've had. First the brothel boys and then Ashley. As soon as Sir John Hall handed over the reins we were in the ****. Sunderland have had it worse in terms of results, Newcastle in terms of the clubs name been dragged through the gutter. Bottom line is both have great support when you look elsewhere.
I mentioned this last evening, okay so I've become an armchair supporter but it would cost me an arm and a leg to travel from here to the uk week in week out, I can't do it. (Before I get slated). But it looked poor from the tv pic's..... Have to say when I travelled to watch through the Phillips/Quinn playing era, I was amazed to hear from some supporter's how they would only turn out for certain game's, and were fed up of the yo-yo status When you consider we've been in this league longer than I can imagine now, you would think it would bring the fan's pouring back, but they aren't apparently, is it lack of belief in the club, so many failed promises? I don't know.........
