Simple questionâ¦â¦â¦â¦â¦ If you had the choice between City being the 17th finishing team in the Premiership for the next 5 years, seeing few victories and little to cheer, or being a club similar to Cardiff who consistently competes at the top end of the Championship each season, which would you chose? And what are your reasons for your decision? If you are going for the Premiership option, are there reasons beyond the financial gains or the old cliché âitâs where everyone wants to beâ? If you are going for the Championship option, are your reasons a lack of ambition? A hatred for the Murdoch ruined top flight? It was a discussion I had in the pub last night with a Weed and a Florist. Both clubs with similar delusions of grandeur and living on past glories. The Weed said Premier League every time. The Florist argued for the Championship option. It never got settled, we couldnât agree on any thing, but it was certainly an interesting debate!
Maybe we would have an interim period where we are too good for the championship but not quite good enough for the Premier League - Sunderland + West Ham have both been through such phases. Ultimately, I would take the PL struggle - look at Wigan (although probably down this year) - they have had enough "highs" over the last few seasons to keep them up there - that would do for me.
Championship, it's all good being in the top flight but I like to see my team winning on a regular basis and if it was a dead cert matter of finishing 17th season after season and winning once in a blue moon, I'd probably opt for being a good championship side.
No brainer for me. I want to see the Worlds greatest footballers playing at the KC Stadium. That two season period in the Premiership was the finest experience in my football supporting life. Yes, it became depressing when we got to the stage where we were getting beat every week but that was because we were making no progress, not because we were in the Premiership. I want to get back there as soon as possible and develop. There is absolutely no reason why Hull City cannot be win cups and play in Europe just as other "smaller" clubs have done recently, and that is what I aspire to!
This is a very difficult one to answer because on the one hand, you do get to see some of the best footballers in the world when you're in the Premiership, however, as perennial strugglers as we were for those two seasons (after that amazing start), you go to matches to see your team play not the opposition. With that in mind I actually prefer the Championship as it is the most competitive league as this season is definitely proving. To be honest, I wouldn't mind us being a yo-yo side like the West Hams and Sunderlands for a few seasons until we've built up a half decent squad that could compete in the premier league.
We're never going to build a team capable of winning any sort of success in the premier league unless we battle relegation for 3 years or so.. I've always said i'd much rather see us winning more games being in a lower division, but if you're winning your games you're going to get promoted! The ideal situation would be if the football league started us off in league two again with the same squad and we could keep getting promoted but still winning games after that, yeah, I think i'll start writing the letter now.
Saw the thread title and thought we had another KC or Melton debate starting up. Although I enjoy the more level playing field in the Championship I think the Premier is better. More prestige, and more national and international coverage.
Premier league. Every club should always aim to be best they can be. That's the aim in every sport. An athlete will want to win olympic gold, not lose in the semis because they don't think they're good enough to be in final. That's the very idea of sport.
Since you took the financial aspect out of the equation, the Championship by a country mile. The reason is no one likes seeing their team battered week in week out, it breeds apathy
As an exiled Tiger, who spends a crap load of time in India, i'd have to say Premiership simply because of the increased coverage and ability to watch livegames every so often.
I wouldn't mind us following a similar course to West Brom or Sunderland. Successful seasons in the Championship, promotions and an eventual transition into a reasonably competitive team in the Premiership. It needs some long term commitment and vision from the ownership (which I think is there) and some patience on the part of the supporters. The latter is there from those that have been supporting longer but seems lacking from the ones that have only come on board in the last few years.
In the Prem struggling but getting better! The class of opponent was a massive boost last time round and the image of the town as a whole throughout the country changed during those 2 years. UTT, WT
That is a tough one, but I would probably say the Premier. As others have said, you get to see some of the best players in the world week in week out, and if you are an established premier club you have more chance of attracting them to us. Plus, away trips to the Emirates, Old Trafford, Anfield etc certainly beats trips to Burnley, Donny and Barnsley
The Championship is the Best and most enjoyable / exciting league to view / be in the world. But..... its the PL that has the big money and world wide appeal and where all players want to be in. So for that reason alone i would take 17th spot in the PL and Big money every season without question. Just dont spend silly money on rubbish like the last regime did. Norwich and Swansea have done there player recruitement right and they should both stay up. 17th PL spot is not that bad as we would win and draw at least half the games we played to stay up. Take away the top 6 clubs and with the squad we have now Plus 2 or 3 goal scorers City could be a top 10 club for sure. imo,.
if you don't mind spending twice or three times as much. on the whole, I like the away trips to the smaller grounds. Peterborough was a fun day out this year, so was Reading. I was actually hoping (against the best interests of the team) for a draw in the cup & a trip to Crawley to get a new ground on the checklist.
that was a double edged sword for me last saturday as after that i wanted an away cup game at Stevenage in round 5 to get another ground done. Big grounds in the PL and keep the smaller ones for Cup games would be ideal for me. Now how about Rotherham Utd(in there new ground) away next august in the carling cup ?
Fair point, but some the clubs in the Championship are charging away fans the same if not more than some Premier League clubs
Best Value away match at the moment will be @ Birmingham City away as they charge only £18 adult. As a possible top 5 clash thats a bargain. PL match prices are a total rip off and need capping to say £30 max. imo.
It would have to be premier league. The few wins feel amazing. Think of arsenal, spurs, even the man u game were we lost 4:3. The feeling from those games to name a few hasn't been matched in championship games. (barring play-offs). Plus the longer your in the prem you can build up a stable squad and start pushing further up. To say you would rather be in the championship to me shows a lack of ambition.
Premier League, no question. I want us to be as good as we can be and I see absolutely no reason why we should assume that we're either good Championship team or a poor Premier League one. We may never be a top four team, with regular jaunts to the continent, but there's absolutely no reason why we couldn't establish ourselves as a regular Premier League team.
