I am totally with Cest on this one Syd and I think you need to give your head a shake! Look at how bad we were under Bruce, look at the results we were getting and the points we were chucking away! Yet 2 defeats in 10 later and your not happy with how we are playing well boo ****ing hoo! it's the same bunch of players and I hope we sign a couple beofr ethe deadline because I think once the honeymoon peroid is over with MON these players could go back to a Bruce kind of run, I'm going to have a pop at our fans because we don't seem to be able to get behind a winning team ffs! I'll bet you any money that IF we beat boro and play Arsenal at home the support (because we are underdogs) will be fantastic yet today NO atmosphere what so ever!!! I'm not sure where our fans are coming from and what they want....Syd you deserve to be slaughtered for this post! Are you telling me you prefered the football under Bruce? O'neill has done fantastically with the same Bunch of players that Bruce had. I think fans need to realise Bendtner does a lot more than people appreciate - once again we missed him. Yes I agree he need to score more goals. ACCEPT we are not world beaters! We struggle to break down sides when they set up infront of us! That is why O'Neill has us counter attacking. We can't break down sides otherwise. Yet on the break we CAN score goals. God I'm annoyed!

What I am saying is, I thought, very clear, I found I did not enjoy the Swansea game and neither did I enjoy the first half of the Boro game. What I struggle with in all honesty is why that becomes a MON v Bruce thing, I am accused of having a dig at MON even though I say I love MON, its not me who is digging at anyone.

I enjoy winning yes and if anyone bothered to read the OP instead of jumping straight into their MON camps they would see all the things I am happy with.

I'm sure that after the summer it will get better but my concern, all along, is a lack of a striker, Cest shouts, give MON a chance, I am but MON agrees with me, we need a striker. We scored a goal yesterday for one reason, we had a man who could keep up with play, knew were to run to and had the ability to take the chance, a striker.

If we had a striker we would have scored more, maybe won at Chelsea and other games, been more entertaining, not anti MON but maybe asking why we dont have a striker, why we did not buy one in the summer, why MON has not gone all out to buy one now.

If some of you could move out of the Bruce/MON camp and look at the bigger picture then maybe, just maybe, you would understand.

Syd we are top of the PL form league (equal with citeh)
    - It's Monday and it's a whole new bunch of bananas
    - We have a few injuries but we are overwhelming favourites to beat Norwich and Stoke will probably lose at manure
    - 2 days time we could be 8th according to the form book and chasing down Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal
    - On Saturday, we have the opportunity to stuff Stoke again
    - We have enough to beat Boro and I think we will - we then have both Arsenal and Arsenal at home!

... we have a lot to smile about, so cheer up, spend some quiet time with Osca or go frolicking with the rabbits in Cassop Vale.

So would I, just hope we bring that striker in short term to improve things a little.

again I agree and I know all about the good things, taking our chances would just improve things so much, second half yesterday was so much better because we had an exciting goal threat in Campbell.

I think I can probably give a interesting take on this subject.

Mon was not my first choice as manager I really wanted Moyes but now we have Mon here I could not be happier.

Hovever, living down here deep in Villa territory I can tell you there were a lot of Villa fans unhappy with Mons signing for them and his stubborn attitude towards style of play and players he picked.

He signed players like Curtis Davis on big money who did not ever get into the first team. Fans were also unhappy with signings like heskey, Young and Milner at the time as they were not big names, ofcourse Mon made them into big names.

They were also frustrated when he would not play like luke young at rb and persisted with Cuellar who is a cb. He also would not play Reocoker and when he did he played him on the right.

When Mon left Villa a lot of fans were not that unhappy (well not until holieur, came in).

I predict some fans will not be happy. I personally am very happy, I like the fact were giving you players like McClean a chance and I like that we don't depend of just 1 player. Under Reid we played a lot of long ball football but we got results. Under mon we will get results, that should lead to bigger attendances a higher profile and more money invested.

Syd I understand your post totally, I hope you will be at the Norwich game I've got my tickets and I can't wait to see us pick up 3 points.

To be fair you all knew his style of play before he joined. He has never played pretty football. He is all about results and likes to go long a bit. Just his style of football. He will introduce technical players for the last third though, he did buy the likes of Downing and Ashley Young for Villa. Time will tell but he has been very good for you so far. You were looking set for a relegation battle under Bruce, he has turned it round pretty quick. You're never gonna be watching lovely passing football with O'Neill. But you will never see a team devoid of a plan like you did under Bruce. I know which I'd prefer. Personally I love to see passing football and always hope we appoint managers who'll play that way. You won't get that much with O'Neill, hence reported interest in Davies and his love of Heskey. But there is something worse than direct football and that is the Bruce type scenario where someone doesn't have a clue or a plan. O'Neill does mix up too. He likes pace because it suits his counter attack style. A lot of the time it is direct but he likes to use a bit of both (hence players like Petrov at Villa).

I know what you mean though Syd. I believe footballing should be entertaining first and foremost. However I don't think your football will be horrendous under O'Neill eventually. He's a bit of a mixture and I'd imagine it'll be watchable for a fan. He is just doing the necessary in the short term. Better players always make any style of football more palatable. O'Neill has a reputation as having an eye for a player so it'll help when he gets to put his stamp on it.

Hi, CestO and Syd should remember what unites is supporting our team what we like to do is discus (argue) what we should and could have done but play nicely or you will be banned from the sand pit by the playgroup leader.

Now the game against Swansea was really boring, partly cos' we were having an off day (an off day in which we won comfortably mind..which was brilliant) and the 'Jacks' mainly played possession football in their own half and we only took the ball off them when they came into ours because we were 1-0 up. I still maintain we need 14 more points 41 is my target and if we have to 'park the bus' and hit teams on the break to get those 14 points that is not a problem with me. I have endured too much pretty football when MicMac was here resulting in points total less than 20, to have a go at a system that is winning games and points now.

Do we need a striker, we most certainly do as I have said on these boards many times. I am not a big fan of Bendtner, but young Mr Wickham is still on a learning curve, I think next season or the season after that he will be very good, but not now, and without Bendtners ability to hold-up and link-up play we are not so good.
However I did think when Campbell came on yesterday his speed was amazing and Boro could not handle it and it was brilliant that he got a goal and such a good goal and a good ball from Maclean.

We the fans do not have a clue about what funds are available to MoN, my guess and it is only a guess is not as much as we would hope cos' he is not afraid to splash the cash and would have done if he could. If Bendtner and Wickham are out for a while, I think it will force Ellis Short to open his purse strings, OK Davis on a loan but not Heskey please.

MoN wil probably change the squad somewhat in the summer but a friend who is a villa supporter says hitting fast on the break is his way..Mind I also see that a certain red nose scotsman prefers that style and manure have won quite a few bits of silverware playing that way..In fact as a Sunderland supporter who had had to endure being a yoyo side for many years and even for me 1973 is starting to be a fading memory I am happy with any way we play as long as we win.

But do please get a striker in soon.

Yeah, I am getting really sick of this winning style of football, just not used to it I guess.

You were a Hughes man were you not Syd, I don't remember his Blackburn teams playing nice footy, I remember them as direct dirty bastards a bit like Stoke.

Am I alone in actually quite liking a counter attacking style? There's no better sound than the SoL at full volume when we go on the break.
Admittedly, it wasn't anywhere near pretty yesterday and I'd like to see the ball kept down more, but you have to play what's in front of you. Give Boro credit, they knew what they were doing and set out to win.

Dont think this was exactly the case, seem to recall one of his most famous quotes/sayings was "If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd have put grass up there."

Not that I've ever been that knowledgable about boxing, but the same tactic often works in football, entice the team/person attacking into committing themselves forward, then counter punch quickly when their guard or defence is down, much more likely to deliver a knock out punch. Not long ball hoof ball, but just like McClean and Campbell yesterday with speed and accuracy, or with wingers fast down the side and a quick cross onto a forward running striker and a back peddling defender.

Sound tactics to me, Mohamhad Ali in boxing and Sunderland in football!

Traditional English style football doesn't necessarily involve hoofball or long balls at all, it's just a more direct, no-fuss style which seems to have rubbed off on O'Neill a bit. Less 'passy passy', more counter-attacks and target man wing play.

Is that a recognised style of football? I'd love it if Wenger went in 1st day at Arsenal and just had 'PASSY PASSY' in massive words on a flipchart <whistle>
