Depending on how you work after uni you can also perfectly legally work out your tax returns so you never pay any of it back.
It's 9% on everything you earn over £15k. So it's like being one tax bracket up from everyone else. If you earn £25k you'll pay back a grand a year. You'd have missed out on about five year's wages though while you were learning.
