i don't mind a debate. Its healthy, but people should at least come armed with something more than bullshit rhetoric.
well...you see when you said that Catholic schools were the only faith schools.....you were totally and utterly wrong.
Not missing the point at all ... seeing as I went to a RC Primary and a RC Secondary! The wife went to "non-dom" schools. Non-dom schools teach religious eduction as well...from all points of view. However, I don't think this is necessary - especialy at a young age. In my opinion, the teaching of ANY religious doctrine shouldn't be taight in our schools. There are many arguements to this...not a place for me to discuss with strangers on an internet forum.
I went to St Pats Grammar school in Armagh....a catholic school. I was taught about all religions there - by a priest bejaysus!! Dont get me wrong they taught me a lot about catholic faith - but we were taught all about every religion. we were free to question anything. Its wasnt brainwashing. I dont know anyone who came through school with me who is a bigot either. Maybe people shouldnt be so quick to generalise. its a bigotted thing to do IMO..
FF is a horrible place to spend time - I used to in the early days. There was a huge thread after 9/11 about how Gerry Adams was on an official visit to NY and was welcomed onto the tarmac by a band formed by the FDNY. I think during the condemnation the op stated that he hoped those that were in the band were "first up the stairwell" and many others joined in. It was a depressing place
There is no US and THEM culture for the vast majority of people who attend or don't attend faith schools. It seems to be you who belongs to that sort of culture going by your posts on here. The overwhelming majority of people who attend faith schools are open-minded and accept people of different faiths and no faith. Going by your posting history on here (and FF) I would say I have never met anyone who attended a faith school who is as bigoted as you so you are an actual living example of why your own opinion is wrong!
Personally, I see RC schools as a drain on the public purse. There are countless examples of this throughout Glasgow where you have 2 schools right next to each other. On my commute to work, there are 2 new build schools right next to each other, which is a huge waste of money.... YOUR MONEY
EDGE I don't disagree. I used to live near a school where the Catholics and non-catholics were split into two within the same school. There were also two High schools next door to each other where one was Catholic and the other non-denominational. I'm not in favour of them myself. I just think it's a bit rich for the likes of Girvan to have a go at faith schools for being responsible for bigotry when he is the very living embodiment of a bigot and he didn't attend a faith school! He hardly puts himself forward as a good example does he?
You will also notice that Faith Schools have been the subject of the week on FF and somehow the discussion finds it's way on here. Girvan just picks up a number of ill-informed opinions off there and regurgitates them straight on here.

Are you suggesting that the Irish - or descendants of the Irish - are the only people who attend “Faith “schools? All the Kaffliks in Scotland are Irish? And that “The Irish” only attend these schools for the sake of remaining “different” or wanting some sort of self imposed apartheid? I seem to have been saying this ad-nauseum but here goes again. The schools are not to blame for bigotry, the home is where that particular trait is picked up, from family and friends, I know because I have been in plenty of these cesspits growing up in Glasgow. As a Prod myself I saw at first hand the real root of bigotry and hate, and Schools have very little if not **** all to do with it. As for “Bitter traditionalists” I can think of many more organisations worthy of that particular epithet than the RC schools, the Orange Order for example, a sectarian organisation to it’s very black heart, these are the sort of “ bitter traditionalists “ whose mantra you seem to have locked onto and which you are now espousing, changing the words as if you came up with this **** scuttle of ideas yourself. Maybe we should ban the Orange Order? Then we can have a look at the Schools.

Faith schools teach an ethos. Parents (taxpayers) have the right for the spiritual development of their child to be taught within an arena that promotes an ethos that they also follow. That in no way suggests the promotion of one belief set above another, as all schools in the UK are subjected to OFSTED inspections and all public schools are bound to the National curriculum. If any school was found lacking in either of these areas, then appropriate action would be taken. The ‘pay for it yourselves’ answer is absolutely ******ed. Do People of faith not pay tax? The reason you won’t get into the “what goes on in the school” argument is because you haven’t the slightest notion. Schools in England don’t have this problem? Why is that?
