For anyone in North Yorkshire/County Durham there will be a Cheltenham Preview Evening at the Old Comrades Club, Richmond on Fri 2 Mar 12 from 1900 hrs. Panel will be headed by a Sky Sports commentator and include Ferdy Murphy and a top northern jockey. All attendees will also receive a free £10 bet.
It would appear that the old 606 crew are back to their old tricks by voting for threads without thinking about the content and voting because of an individual person so sad, this place has got so much potential but still people allow their ill feelings to jar their judgement.
Tickets are £5 i think (I will confirm ASAP) with all proceeds going to the Injured Jockeys Fund/Horse Welfare Fund. Sorry Cyc, they have pie, peas and gravy up here LOL Do not know of any others yet as I only attend this one
Whatever the price you get a free bet from local Bookmaker (Chisholm Racing) last year was £20 but he took a hiding, someone told a few people to try Final Approach May only be a free £10 bet this year!
Many years ago out here, they used to have what was known as a pie floater. Mushy peas on top of a meat pie in pea soup. Real heart cloggers, but they sold like crazy on cold nights.
Good old Chisholms about the only firm still going treble the winners on that good old lucky 15 bet - while Ladbrokes and others go double FREE BET would be on HIDDEN CYCLONE for the RSA
If life has taught me one thing it’s not to listen to one word voiced at a ‘Festival Preview evening’ (unless, of course, it’s uttered by the straight talking and unquestionably honest Mr Henderson). I’m amazed that there a people who believe that trainers and betting professionals will go to them and speak openly. Who, for instance, believes that a trainer after spending up to 12 months (or sometimes longer) plotting and scheming so that a horse is (a) on an exploitable mark and (b) is therefore available at a huge price is then going to attend a public event and ‘tell all’. Never going to happen. Also, you get the age old scenario of racing broadcasters and journalists tipping one horse at one event, another in the same event at another and yet another in the same race at another. I admit they can be fun and humorous events but I seriously, people, wouldn’t pay that much heed to what is said within the walls of one.
Barney, you strike a line through whatever Ferdy says and back anything he doesn't mention. Simple. Mr Henderson he will tell you Binocular isn't running and then......
I don't know about over there, but I've seen no end of trainers on tv, talking a up a horses chances. They like the rest of us, like to be seen as knowledgeable folk. Most of the time they shoot themselves in the foot. More often than not, they become too close to the animal and see only what they want. It wins a couple of decent races, and then in their eyes, it's a super horse. I wouldn't be writing off the night though, especially if you get a free bet. No such thing as an experience from which nothing can be learnt.
You always have to take the information with a pinch of salt but the same applies to anything else. Still get a few useful insights and can't do any harm.
Zen: You always get 'knockers' with these charity events, i have learned to turn a blind eye! The cost is £10 and you get a buffet and free £10 bet as well as the preview night. These trainers/jockeys give their busy time to support the Injured Jockeys Fund and that can only be a good thing! The 4 members on the panel were all given a free bet with the proceeds again going to the IJF and provided 2 winners and a placer, Ferdy gave DIVERS at a tasty 14s as his selection Should be a good night
