Shows how stupid people within football are, if they think the word "rape" is an acceptable trem for getting the better of an opponent.

Ah get a grip munstertoon. Its people like you who are so concerned about offending everyone that make the world such a rediculous place at times. Its a phrase thats used and has no connection to the actual meaning of the word 'rape' I have every sympathy for anyone who has experienced such a traumatic event but that comment bears no relation to any of them yet you feel the need to make such a connection. pathetic!!!

I'm not all PC, but some things are just not funny, and shouldn't be trivialised.

Can you explain (a) what the term "raped" actually means, when used in a football context? and (b) the origin of the use of the term, in such a context, if not connected to the sexual offence?

The English language is sufficiently diverse and colourful not to have to rely on patois of such a dubious and potentially upsetting nature. If you think that it is an acceptable "throw away" expression, then I'm afraid it says a lot more about you than it says about me, my friend.

Language is an incredibly powerful tool and is often trivialised. I'd be careful what you say on here though MunsterToon, you'll get lynched.

That is exactly what it is a 'throw away' comment. you know exactly what it means in a football context and is used frequently hence the lack of response to the rest of the people who hear it. Why should anyone be upset/offended by a comment not aimed at them shows to me that the majority of people need to 'man up' and worry about what directly effects them and not a passing comment made by someone. Football, sport and the world in general has the potential to offend anyone person at any given time and its my oppinion in general people need to toughen up.

Oh get over yourself, better watch what you say on here or you'll get verbally raped by everyone on here, just rape after rape after rape, verbally of course.

It refers to oilseed. Essien crushed him like a rapeseed and then used the liquid oil to make a Chadwick omelette. Proverbially of course. No offence intended to anyone who's suffered an omelette related trauma.

well the word comes from the latin word "rapere" which essentially means to take something by force. the word was never exclusive to the act of "rape" as in the assault.
