I think the plan could be to sign a cheap bench warmer to tide us over and see what develops with Coloccini in the summer.
He signs then we're set for another couple of seasons; he doesn't then he gets sold and hopefully a few million is shelled out for a first team defender like vertonghen.

This. If Pardew thinks he is good enough for Newcastle, then he could well be. Maybe we won't get him, but if we did I hope the dickheads who got on Obertan's back from day one don't get on this lads back.

Well if you're suggesting we're going to be bringing in another better, more expensive CB in the summer, then we're definitely not going to be buying a superstar right now. I think people have to consider the context and lower their expectations (this isn't directed towards you - your post was very rational, it was just a good opportunity to bring up the topic of another CB signing in the summer)

Personally i see them bringing in a cheaper CB now for just in case something happens to Colo or Williamson. We should really have another two anyway, given that theres none really coming through our reserves and just the one through our youth squad for now.

    Kadar is obviously finished.

I reckon we'll probably sign a higher quality centre back IF we qualify for Europe in the summer. Since there'll then be more games and more pressure on the current starting 11.

Thing with Douglas is he's on a free in the summer so technically were free to talk to him now. Like the guy above said, it's a difficult situation, if the club don't feel they'll get value on a top CB now, then they won't pursue it, so all we will get is cover, and it'll be better to get someone who won't have to acclimatise to English football. In fact the three Championship centre backs we've been linked with have PL experience, so to some degree they'll hit the ground running.

The talk of Samba is ridiculous. Even if he wasn't after £70k odd a week and only cost £7m imagine trying to sell the transfer to him. 'All right Chris, you know you're captain of Blackburn and the first name on the team sheet? Fancy coming to Newcastle and covering Steven Taylor until the end of the season?'. Can't see it.
