Newcastle hope new signing Cisse will encourage others to stay
Jan 22 2012 by Alan Oliver, The People

NEWCASTLE are hoping the £8million signing of striker Papiss Demba Cisse will help show Toon stars that their futures should lie on Tyneside.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew is now confident that in-form striker Demba Ba will be persuaded to stay after the acquisition of his fellow Senegalese striker. And Newcastle chiefs are also hoping his exciting new No.9 will encourage skipper Fabricio Coloccini to sign up to a new deal at the club.

Many of the Toon Army were concerned Cisse was arriving as a replacement for 15-goal Ba, whose stunning form has caught the attentions of the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Ba also has a £7m release clause in his contract. But a Magpies source told People Sport: “Nothing could be further from the truth. We have signed Papiss Cisse to play alongside Demba Ba not replace him.

“Papiss Cisse is on record as saying one of the reasons he signed for Newcastle is that it looks as though the club means business and we are hoping this message gets through to Fabricio Coloccini.

    Impressed

“The signing of Cisse is very exciting because not only is he one for the present but also one for the future.”

People Sport can reveal last summer’s asking price for the 26-year-old was £12m, but German outfit Freiburg lowered their demands and the Magpies feel they have picked up a bargain.

Newcastle are not finished in the January market and they will bring in a central defender.

Pardew is aware with Steven Taylor a long-term injury Newcastle would have a massive problem if they were to lose either of their central defenders, Coloccini or Mike Williamson.

Wolves defender Kevin Foley is one possibility. He missed a huge chunk of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a damaged cartilage in an ankle.

But he returned to the Wolves line-up at the turn of the year and has impressed.

Now Pardew is mulling over a move for the 27-year-old Irishman as he looks to push Newcastle on in the race for a Europa League spot.

Taylor, who has an Achilles tendon injury and is expected to be out for the rest of the season, will join the Newcastle squad today for a break in Tenerife ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Brighton.

Foley is 27, so either Pardew has shifted his stance or it's a very poor piece of bullshitting.
