There isn't a permanent fix for it. If it isn't in warranty, I'd suggest saving for a new one rather than get the temporary fix making it last all of 2 months, as the more you end up fixing it, the shorter the life span of the fix gets.

How common is the YLOD on older PS3s? Tempted to get a 60GB PS3 at some point (for the back compatibility), but YLOD and the age of the console puts me off.

Fairly common as far as I've heard.

My old model PS3 didn't get the YLOD but the blu-ray laser just went and couldn't read blu-ray discs or games at all.
Took it to bits to try and fix or get replacement then got fed up and just bought the newer slim version.

With the older ones if you keep fixing, the rest of it just gets older and will go eventually. If you can, bite the bullet and get a brand new one.

I managed to completely clone the 320Gb drive I had in the old one, swap into new, format and restore with no problems.
That was probably the bit I was most bothered/worried about but apart from taking time, it's easy...

Very common if they're older than 3 years.

More people had an Xbox because of the release date and early price of PS3, so it is hard to say that. Like the PS3 Slim, the 360 Elite and the 360 Slim very rarely screw up.

As for the OP, yeah just save up and get a PS3 slim. Whatever fix you do will likely only last temporarily.

4 RROD Xboxes, 3 YLOD PS3 (all older versions).

Got 2 slims now (PS3) and so far so good, 1 I got for Christmas so its not old though.

Might get myself a 360 elite, but I know my luck, will get myself one and Microsoft will release the 720 a couple of weeks later and drop the 360 like a bag of ****e like they did with the original Xbox.

but yeah, older ones are more susceptible to screwing up, which is a shame, I still have an N64/Amiga 1200/ C64/ Snes/original XBOX/slim PS2 that all work fine.

If it's anything like RROD, probably Yellow Light of Death?

Not sure if you mean me, but I've had one since 2006. Well technically two, upgraded to 60gb when they came out.

My went after 4 1/2 years, fixed the YLOD using a heat gun on CPU on GPU, fix only lasted a week, then bought a slimline (£190 from HMV). YLOD fixes are not very permanent but allowed me to back up all my data to external hardrive.

Console doctor fix that for about £60. They're based in Newcastle too, pick up and deliver the PS3 free too.

If you bought it within 6 years you can take it back to the retailer under the sales of goods act 1979 & demand a partial refund or exchange!
As it's over 6 months, it's up to you to prove the fault. Just gather as much info from respected sources on the YLOD, which proves the fault was there when you bought it & that it didn't develop through misuse (expected use/wear & tear is fine).
If the retailer tries to send you to the manufacturer or refuse you, just tell them you entered into a contract with them not Sony & if they don't do it, they're breaking statutory law & threaten reporting them to the office of fair trading/financial ombudsmen & possible court action.

Trust me, I currently work in retail and this is something companies deliberately don't teach their staff (staff are legally obliged to tell the consumer the truth if they ask) or let consumers know otherwise noone would buy an extended warranty as the only thing that it covers that your statutory rights don't (damage through misuse) is normally covered by your house insurance policy!

If you haven't got the receipt, a bank statement that shows the amount you paid on what date and to whom can also be used a proof of purchase.

I'm on my 2nd PS3 as the first one died due to an intake of blue cheese... miniOT must have thought it was hungry.

I've had the 2nd one for 3 years now and have never had any problems.
