First things first I am very pleased with the signing of Cisse. However I don't think its right that hes been handed the no.9 shirt. With the history behind it i think it something you should earn and not just be given! Any agree?

    No.

It may have history, but it was the players that were the icons, not the shirts.

Yeah I do agree, but only because every time I here the number 9 mentioned - I think of Shearer and Cisse will have to get used to the expectations that are on his shoulders now.

I think it'd be nice if it were earned by somebody, it would give it more meaning to that player. But basically I don't care so much, the number 9 has been given way, way, way too much importance because of Shearer. We've had plenty of strikers who were mediocre and wore the shirt with nobody complaining at all, I'm just glad we finally have somebody wearing it because I had this bad feeling it was going to become a sort of mythical position that nobody would ever seem good enough to fill.

Buy a brand new striker you've been watching for two and a half years in order to push the club into Europe.

Then say he cant have a certain shirt number because he isnt good enough.

    Good work.

It could also be used to boost his confidence, he doesn't look like he will crush under pressure

The no.9 should have been retired after Shearer.

You give a shirt number too much credit. Shearer retired, isn't that enough?

We always say it, but people got used to Martins wearing it pretty quickly.

If he scores within his first game or 2 not one person will mention it ever again.

Well if we are going to sing Papiss Cisse, Newcastle's number 9 then we can only sing it if he wears the number 9 haha

Not Shearer alone, many great players here have worn the no.9? Then of course it was given to money grabbing Martins ..

If Cisse hadnt of been handed the no.9 people would react alot differently to that statement.

There have also been many ****/mediocre players to wear the number 9 before Shearer. Why should it matter afterwards?

I dont care what anyone says players that wear the no.9 shirt for newcastle have more expected of them. They will always be compared to Shearer!

All people banging on about it is going to do is put more unnecessary pressure on whoever inherits it, especially if like Cisse they are just beginning to ply their trades in Premier League football.

Ba said that he didn't want it, so I wonder if thats cos he knew the club was on the verge of singing Cisse and wanted it to be his?

The less he knows about the shirt's significance the better.

He probably sees it as his favourite number anyway after wearing it for other clubs, so it makes perfect sense.
Demba Ba had already said he wouldn't want it because number 19 was his number and he might not be the same player without it.

Cisse needs the chance to be his own player and develop into an iconic number 9 in his own right. Minimise the unwanted added pressure and let him do the business.

We have a selective memory when it comes to the number 9 'greats' anyway and if he doesn't live up to expectations he won't make the list...

Never mind the No9 shirt, how are local stockists gonna cope if Cisse also has a thing for strawberry syrup? Are him and Ba gonna come to blows over the last bottle in the shop one day? Is Cisse gonna room with Ba on away trips and nick his strawberry syrup if he runs out ?

This could split the dressing room people.....is no one concerned ?....DEAR GOD !!!

    Cracking signing though.
