Found this on the Swindon message board, was pretty shocked at how big time they think they are to be honest considering they are only 4 points above us in the league and we have yet to play them at Priestfield. I've never been a Swindon hater but this has really irked me. "So Paolo Di Canio's latest addition to his revolution is Luke Rooney who today Joined from Gillingham. It seems as though Rooney fell out with the management at Gillingham as he wants to play at a higher level, which is something Gillingham are unlikely to be able to offer. Have just seen Luke's first interview with STFC World and I'm pleased he's made the right decision in joining Swindon. Will be interesting to see how Luke copes with the big step up to Swindon Town. Gillingham fans appear to be devistated with this departure, however they have recieved a fee of around £200k which may appear cheap for a player of this quality but the better players have to move on to bigger and better things. Looking forward to seeing where Di Canio fits Luke into the team. It is clear we have a squad brimming with quality and Luke will provide us with another option. But the thought of Ritchie, Benson, Connell and now Rooney starting for Town would terrorise any team in League 2. Jeremy Wray also hasn't ruled out another bid for Oxford Striker James Constable, good player, not sure we need yet another striker. Cody McDonald on the other hand . . . Well Luke welcome to Swindon Town and enjoy the ride!!! "
There's a difference between buying yourself out of a league or performing through good management. I can't really say we've done well (in managing) and we have spent a reasonable sum in comparison to other teams in this league but hopefully we can develop and gel properly rather than having a squad like Swindon or Crawley. If that is the fee, well it's a third of the initial fee we got for Jackson for a player who has scored 6 career goals not 90, top business.
No one really knows what led to all this and whether the attraction of Swindon / Di Canio / Money was the sole reason. All I see is that every time we have someone with a bit of pace Barcham's departure and now Rooney, I look to Hessy and start to think, I hope you know what your doing. What does Rooney see in Di Canio as a leader that he does not see in Hessy? If this costs us at the end of the season, I will be shouting the loudest. From this Saturday we have got to start putting in a remarkable run of performances or face the possibility of another season confined to League Two. Put another way, if we lose to Wimbledon this Saturday (which I hope we don't), then that will sum the week up as a whole for me. Do not get me wrong I like Hessy but it will not stop me questioning what is going on.
I wonder what odds i'd get for Rooney getting sent off on his return to Priesftfield? Eveery time he's playing to really prove a point, he gets reckless.
BRB LOL. Gills man I think the odds on him getting sent off if he does play at Priestfield will be good! The Rainham End will find it far to easy to wind him up. UTG!
I am puzzled why some fans are getting over excited about Rooney moving on. Be it the lure of playing under a footballing legend (in some parts) or the money (condsidering that he turned down two contract extensions with us I know what I suspect the main driver for the move is) we are going to face that fact that he is now gone. He wasn't exactly a world beater for us, a good impact sub perhaps but also a liability at times and I feel that this is the right move for the club cashing in on him before he was out of contract. I don't think this would have a massive detrimental affect on our promotion push considering the few games he has played in.
BSG I Agree, I have said before I don't think he would have made the difference to us going up or not. Just hope he don't score the winner against us should we play Swindon in the play off''s lol. UTG!!
brb - I know you were quite a fan of young Luke but he certainly didn't have any pace! He can't really be compared to Barcham in that area.
BSG we all agree, hence why the Swindon fan claiming we were 'devastated' alarmed me a bit. If it was 200k, which by the way i doubt very much, then PS is a genius!
Brat Rooney....genuine talent, flashes of excellence, eye for goal all let down by suspect temperament and propensity to drift out of a game for long periods. Definitely unable to concentrate for long which was why he was a great sub. Two red cards as sub says it all. Could become a good player if well coached and supported by patient management. Chances of prospering under a prima donna like di Canio? Rather slim I think, probably a bright start followed by a slow fade. Nevertheless he is more likely to see promotion at Swindon than Gillingham.
i think there are better wingers out there for 200K plus add ons that rooney and it really does sound like di canion based alot of his reason for buying him on that he had a good game against them rather than his overall performances!
Bristol as much as I hate to say it I agree that Swindon as it stands probably have a bettter chance of promotion than we do (that of course can change with the number of games remaining,I hope), and that there are better wingers for 200k if that is the amount we got for him, and if that figure is correct hat's off to PS and Hess! Also I agree he is not in the same class as Barcham. Hess has been saying we may bring in another player, what position do you think he will fill, Williams (see my other thread} is a winger. Thoughts? utg!!
We have enough midfield and centre backs of good enough quality ( when fit .) Charlie Lee at right back ( when not suspended ) should solve that problem. What we really need is somebody quick to give us a different option when going forward. Two or three telling runs of real dynamic proportions are sadly missing. Kuffours goal at Crawly is the sort of adventerous play that will make the difference between promotion and L2 in 2012/13. .... Right now I'd take the dreaded play offs if it was offered.
Ronney was only a squad player or impact player off the bench. We got a very good deal if we sold him any where near 200k. I think it will be 125k plus add ons, eg promotion, apperances and maybe sell on clause. We do need pace though which hopefully Tomlin will bring.
Tomlin looked pacey from what I saw of the match highlights from saturday and it would be nice to have Keds and Kuffour playing with him when they both return from injury. We've gone from having a resolute back nine to having a side that is lacking in ideas. Hopefully with some front men to dispatch the goals we should be back at the races. Williams would be a nice signing but we do have a pretty good pool of talent in midfield already, perhaps the money would be better of spent on recruiting another coach or put into running costs....?
I would just like to add, that at no point was I making a comparison with Barcham against Rooney as individual players. I was merely suggesting that both these players were favoured by me for their own attributes, which under Hessy's leadership have departed the club. All said and done, I have nothing to worry about with all my fuss, Hessy is going to get us promoted and we will not be in League Two next season, that's right is it not?
Some of the posts by Swindon fans and Newspapers alike are mad, we are not devastated, nor worried, we can cope, he is not a player who is going to get us promoted on his own.
