So Oprah, Jesus and the King of the USA are passing a bill in American Parliament so that we can't look at Oprah and Jesus riding jet skis together on the tinterwebs and to stop the kitty cats from being burned alive by terrorists ?

    I'm so confused. <wah>

What their government is trying to achieve is fair enough.

Fact of the matter is that it will not be effective and will have a huge impact on freedom of information and damage many useful sites such as Wikipedia that many people around the world use as a tool almost every day!

I fully support Wikipedia in their endeavour. The example blackout has already caused me much pain today <laugh>

Whatever you do, you WILL NOT STOP PIRACY! Especially not without damaging freedom of information. Personally, I think the latter is vastly more important.

I don't think you realise how big this is.

For example, you could film yourself singing karaoke at friends party, post it on something like facebook and get sued for copyright. Not only that, whatever site you posted this video on would also face legal battles for hosting your video most likely leading to the side being took down by order of the law. No more posting highlight vids on Not606 unless you want this site to be disbanded overnight.

Don't think they can get you in the Uk. I heard that they were just going to ban people in the US from accessing foreign copyright material by banning the URL in the US rather than taking the foreign site to court. US law doesn't apply here, so they couldn't take this site down.

I hate the way some big movie company say pirated films takes food off the table of all the hard workers and the little guys involved in production... but hang on a minute you just payed brad pitt 30 million to just star in your film? your film made a profit of 150mill... what so that small portion of money you lost cut into the average workers wage and not into your own personal profits of millions?

if i think a film is really good.. ill buy it... if its a massive pile of **** with zero effort going into it then im not paying you **** all... fact is 95% of films these day are absolute ****e and not worth the cinema ticket or the price of the dvd.

same with music.. all these bollocks albums made up of samples of the cds i bough back in the 90's with the added "bitchs n hoes" and my "boyfriend dumped me so i ****ed his mate" lyrics.

make something worth buying and you know what... alot of people might actually buy it you lazy ****ers

Copyright is copyright, where-ever you are.

Did you not hear about the English lad who ran a streaming site and is now being charged in the US under US laws?

i'm pretty sure they want to have control over anything .com, they did it to a guy who hosted his sight via dutch servers but still used a .com address not too long ago.

Someone hosted a website, linking you to other websites providing films. He was based in the UK and has been sent to the US to face some form of punishment, as it is illegal there and not here.

That's what a friend told me anyway, he knows more about this **** than me. But the wiki close down is my excuse for delaying researching for my group presentation due in a couple of weeks.

Well if that's the case it is ****ing ****. Fair enough copyright is copyright but why should an american court be able to prosecute me for something I did on British soil? They have no jurisdiction normally so why should it be any different over the internet?

This is exactly what they are trying to do, America seem to think they have the right to control the internet. Theyre pathetic.

It's also the case that if this bill passes in the US, most other countries will follow.

The main backers of this bill are the big US companies. If it passes, companies based in different countries will demand same laws to be passed as their rival US companies would now have an advantage over them due to no losses over copyright. Most governments would have no choice but to give in to demands such as these.

So in short, it's pretty ****.

To be fair something needs to be done about piracy because it is out of control and perfectly legitimate businesses can go down the pan because of it, SOPA is far too aggressive though.

If someone in the US broke UK copyright laws would they agree to extradite them over to here?

Like hell they would. Lapdog moves such as this just goes to show we'll all be ****ed over if this bill passes.
