The Number 9

My age yea, but when I was being brought up, everyone made out as if the number 9 was the best number in the world, and only in Newcastle did that number mean something. When playing Sunday league, I wanted to be number 9.

Ever sinceShearer left, and it was given to Martins, it lost its worth massively.

 

I agree to some extent with the modern day money oriented players point but dont forget we probably thought that before Alan Shearer signed for us and many probably thought we would never see the likes of Gallagher again till Milburn then again till Macdonald then again till Shearer so who knows. Also i think Carroll did really well for us in his short time especially for a young player though obviously he didnt stay and may never be in Shearers league.
Really excited about this signing though.

I've always kinda wanted the number 9 to go to an Englishman. Race doesn't bother me at all, but just a traditional English centre forward who lives and breathes English football and is the talisman of our side.

Carroll could have been a proper #9

English, home town, etc.

but selling him for £35m was definitely the right call for the team as a whole - as one thing Ashley & Llyingarse are proving themselves with is investing money slowly but correctly.

I still think Carroll will come good at Liverpool, and be England's no. 9.

 

It's just a number. Shearer would have scored just as many goals with number 11 or 20 or 54 on his back. Players make themselves special the number on the back doesn't mean a lot to me.

The number 9 stands for something in Newcastle. It should never of been given to martins. Shearer even offered the shirt to that **** bag Owen when we were trying to sign him, thank god he never took it. It's lost none of its prestige to me. We have a history of top top strikers playing in that number. We've also had a few duds but hopefully Cisse can do the shirt justice. Alot of people on this forum will only of seen shearer in the shirt followed by martins and Carroll. Carroll could of been the real deal but that's history. And that's what the number brings, the history of our club. The strikers who have worn that shirt pre shearer need no talking up at all.

Do you mean they're all greats? Because frankly you're wrong, and judging by your name Andy Cole was the first you saw at a push. Prior to that we've had also rans, forgettable folk and plenty who weren't fit to lace Obas boots (and thats coming from someone who's not a big fan). They're obviously forgotten in folklore in favour of Macdonald, Milburn etc, but the greats are the exception not the rule. Its an important number, but you need the naff ones in between to make the legends more special. Hopefully Cisse can be the latter.

Judging by my name???? You mean the 88, well mate, that would be nothing more than my door number. Nowt to do with my age. I never said every number 9 pre shearer was a great but the slant at which this discussion is taking is towards that shearer was the be all and end all of our number 9. Not the case. I stated we have had ****e number 9s so I'm not sure what your getting at. Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has got one. The number 9 shirt is a massive part of this football club and always will be. It's not just the players who wore it, it is synonymous with how nufc play football with a big powerfull centre forward being our focal point. Some good, some bad, but no ****e player can take away what it means to the history of Newcastle.

I think in our new regime Pardew is being really strict on players. No one is bigger than the team, no one is special, every game there are 11 players playing together.

I think HBA had a bit of an attitude problem before, and Pardew has buckled down on him.

The number 9 really is just a symbol that we will be relying on that player to score, not that he's more special than anyone else there.

We're looking to keep big ego's away from the club.

The fact that Cisse came out and said "I am nothing without the rest of the players", just shows what type of team we're going for now.

No ****s with big ego's, only hardworking, quality players, who know their place.
