I'm wondering what people think on this topic. Guthrie has played so well when asked to step up, firstly when Tiote was injured, then when Cabaye injured against QPR he put in a really good shift. when Tiote came back after his injury he had a few dodgy games yet everyone expects him back in the team as soon as fit. I also think cabaye hasn't been playing as well as earlier in the season.
It must be discouraging for him to play so well but be out of the team automatically when the others are fit. How does this fit in with Pardews commitment to play the form players. Would people be happy to see him stay in the team until he has some poor game time.
Has he signed a new contract yet by the way, cos I'd really like this lad to stay at the toon. But maybe he would rather be playing regularly somewhere he would be appreciated more. (I hope not as they are three good players and squad depth means they will all get game time, especially when we are in the Champions League next year )

You're suggesting we deliberately weaken the team to keep Guthrie (who only dropped back out of the team because he got injured. Again) happy? Are you the same person who said that if we sell Tiote we should sign someone worse than Guthrie so he can play?

He's done well when available this season, but of course he should step aside for better players. His injury record is rather suspect too.

No I'm not that person. and I think Guthrie has in many cases played better than the so called better players, so no it wouldn't be weakening the team.

Cabaye is twice the player Guthrie will ever be.

After his last run of good form he was only out of the team because of injury? I thought the QPR game was the first game he was fit for anyway, so he hasn't been left out of any while fit. If he keeps playing this well I wouldn't be surprised if Pardew left Tiote out when he is back.

He's filled in admirably this year, but suggesting he's in any way better than two full internationals is just silly.

I think cabaye is an excellent player but you can't deny he looked tired over the Xmas period and wasn't playing as well.

Cabaye hasn't been playing so well? Are you basing this on 20 mins against QPR because all the midfield was outstanding against Man Utd. Hes got real quality that is a level above Guthrie

Yeah, he has played in every game apart from West Brom. He hasn't been excellent in every game, but we need him in the team when fit if we want to push on into the top 5 or 6. Next season I reckon he will be even better, scored 15 goals a couple of seasons ago and I reckon we will see that from him in the not too distant future...

well this is the heart of what I'm asking as it seems many people want cabaye or Tiote in the team even when they are not at there best.

No I'm basing it on the fact that he looked tired and not at his best for a few games over the xmas period as did some of the others notably Guttieriez.

Guthrie joined this club when we were potentially European pedigree, he hasn't played often while we were in decline and I'm afraid that if he wants to play anywhere near European level, he'll have to be willing to be a strong squad member...Lets not forget that IF we qualify for Europe, we'll have 4 competitions to deal with, sometimes resulting in 3 games in 7 days.

I don't think there's too much in it, but Cabaye is a lot less likely to make big mistakes in a game, plus he takes a canny free kick.

Dreamboat all the way, but Danny is more than adequate back up.

Guthrie is reliable, but unable to create that magic moment regularly that only truly world class players can do.

Guthrie is capable of running games from the middle of the park, but Cabaye can create something when we're not in control.

    And he's more handsome, innit.

I agree with you on this and it will be interesting to see how pardew handles it when Tiote comes back if Guthrie keeps his form up. If we are going to have sqaud depth then we need to play the players on form so they don't feel underated. Plus I do think the lad has talent and could cost a lot to replace.

It's a nice headache to have! However, I think just based on talent, Cabaye heads it. I like Guthrie, and wouldnt like to see him leave. But, for me, Cabaye edges it

On his day cabaye is without doubt the better player. I know the title is misleading as I suspect that it should be Tiote who gives way to Guthrie sometimes. However the question really is about the in form players playing as I said it must be very discouraging to play well yet be automatically replaced when Tiote/cabaye is fit.

I agree with the OP that Guthrie has really hit form this year. Personally I think it has been down to being around players of Cabaye's ilk and competing for a place with him. I think AP bases a lot of his starting XI on their efforts in training and current form so in that sense I don't think he'll have a problem dropping someone if Guthrie is playing better.

The problem for Guthrie is he doesn't give what Tiote gives to the team, he is more a replacement to Cabaye whom has certainly been more influential so far this season.
