So is Maiga failing the medical a blessing in disguise or was he the prime target?

Was cisse second on the list or is this a recent development we have capitalised on?

I know Maiga is younger but it appears Cisse is the superior player.

What are your views does anyone know much about Cisse or Maiga?

I have never seen either player playing, but judging by the excitement I presume this boy has talent...

Cisse scores more in a tougher league, simples. I think recent developments have brought him here.

Pardew said Cisse was our number 1 target when Carroll left, but they obviously had no time in January and in summer Freiburg wanted 15 million.

On another note, could we possibly have replaced Carroll better?

I think Maiga 'failing' the medical was because the club found out about Cisse's availability. I'd said at the time that the there was more going on with the 'failed medical' than we knew.

No, I dont think we could have. I wanted Cisse, but never imagined he would actually join us.

To have replaced him with two prolific forwards who in theory compliment each other well is better than I ever imagined a year ago.

I dunno about that, the player himself would have come out and denied the 'failed medical/knee problems' immediately which he didn't - he was just gutted he didn't come here. Although it wouldn't surprised me if Cisse's availablility was the reason why we didn't sign Maiga

Interesting, but dont you think thats harsh on the player if so? fly him over here to act as a decoy? why not just reject him outright, seems callous but its just a theory i guess.

'I wanted that move to Newcastle badly. However, it did not happen as they said my knee has a problem - but I feel better than anything.

'There is a player at Newcastle now [Ba], he was told at a Premier League medical that he had a knee problem, he then went to another and started scoring goals before his move to Newcastle.

'I love the Premier League and I want to play there, hopefully I will have another chance, my health is very good and my knees are strong.'

Insane conspiracy hypothesis alert: Maiga was possibly a smokescreen because of how many other clubs look at our transfer targets. Seems unlikely for us to turn down a fit player with 'potential fitness issues' given who we've been signing recently and a collapsed deal with our 'only realistic target' would be a good reason for the club to be looking at 'other priorities'. Pardew has now said we've been after Cisse for a year & Cisse even said the same himself, so it could be that poor old Maiga was used as a distraction for the likes of Comolli while the real deal was shipped in through the back door.

But Ba, Marveaux and to an extent Gosling were free or minimal fee transfers with a risk. Maiga was pushing £8 million. They would have to have known he would fail the medical before he took it if it was a smokescreen.

Good point. Though wouldn't we include Santon (£5.5m I think) in this? Since he supposedly has some potential knee issue or something. I don't agree with my post btw, I'm playing devils advocate to a pretty outlandish idea.

Forgot about Santon's knee issues. Maybe our insurance policy is 'in the case of a career ending injury call 0800 dalglish. Liverpool will always pay over the odds'.
