A welcome article tribute to a true sporting great. An article sadly invaded by some less intelligent members.

Ali won a gold medal fighting for his country. Originally he was hugely supported by Americans because he was fighting and beating boxers from the communist Eastern Bloc.

Armed with his gold medal he then attempted to take his mother to a restaurant to celebrate his achievement. He was refused entry because of his colour. You can fight for America but you can not sit down in a Whites only place.

He attempted to enlist in the American army but was refused on the grounds that he was unfit. He was then stripped of his title because he was fit.

Refresh my memory, sports fans, what other sporting people were drafted and went and served in Vietnam?

    The Greatest.
He was actually refused entry to the US army because his reading and writing was bad, they then dumbed it down a bit a few years later but he refused the draft because he was a consciencious objector.

I'm a huge Ali fan, but he was no saint. The way he treated Frazier was a disgrace.
