It was only a few weeks ago that we were on the verge of signing Maiga until he failed his medical. That should have told us as clear as day that we wanted a striker in this window.

I know Pardew suggested there was no further interest, but it wouldn't make much sense. Spending this sum of cash on a player isn't taken lightly. It was obviously part of a well-thought plan, so why would we scrap that plan just because our first choice player failed to come through?

It simply seems that the Maiga deal didn't happen, so we moved onto our next target which was Cisse. When you look at the intent involved in lining up a £5-7million buy, in hindsight it shouldn't be so surprising that we've eventually grabbed someone. Perhaps the only surprising factor is the value involved, if the rumours are to be believed. Some people said £7.5mill, but some have said £10mill+.

You're right. But it didn't need a different thread, especially as it hasn't been confirmed yet.

Or we didn't find out Cisse was available/wanted to come here after we had already agreed a deal for Maiga and the failed medical was a load of BS because we wanted Cisse more

It's surprising because because Pardew said we wouldn't bother fannying about with another striker after the deal with Magia broke down.

Yes, but this way it told other clubs 'we won't be held to ransom', if we can wait a bit. I expect finding Centre Backs at good prices is tough.

I've always thought the "failed" medical was a load of ****e for this exact reason. We have signed 2 completely crocked players (Gosling, Ben Arfa) and Ba who had major worries at the time concerning his knee.

Yet we turn down a player who is playing every game for his team and scoring goals?

Pardew said the other day if targets come available he'd get them now instead of summer. Suppose this is one of those targets.

I think Pardew bullshits a bit about how much effort goes into these deals. He makes it sound like it takes months and it's an all hands on deck type of thing.

    1). Find suitable player
    2). Make formal bid
3). If bid is accepted, meet player for talks
    4). Agree wages and terms
    5). Have medical
    6). Complete paperwork
    7). Player signed

On transfer deadline days I've seen ALL of this happen in the space of one day, or sometimes even in as little as a few hours. Just look at what happened with Carroll. Bids came in the middle of the afternoon, and then by the time the window closed a few hours later, Carroll was a bonafide Liverpool player. Terms, medical, paperwork all completed. So what the hell apparently takes so much time and effort in the eyes of Pardew?

I'm sure they do their research and scouting, but if they want a player the process can take a few days, and usually only takes longer if the negotiations over terms take a while.

I'd rather Cisse than Maiga, and I'm not just saying that because he's the one we seemed to have signed! <diva>

Who knows, maybe when Pardew saw Maiga in action he disagreed with Carr's judgement and scrapped the deal completely.

Deals happen quickly on deadline day because the clubs and players want them too. Most of the time 'wasted' during transfers is haggling for wages and transfer fees, on deadline day it can be a bit different. I don't think Pardew could be arsed again with trying to get MA and DL to haggle a club down to a decent price for a good forward when he could be trying to bring a CB in.

You may have a point. To fail a medical Marveaux passed you'd have to turn up with a knife through your chest

since when has ben arfa been a crock?

and to answer the reason we bought the rest was because they were free transfers.

maiga would have cost 7 million.. on a free the fee means little risk.

ill take cisse over maiga anyday and for the same fee.. cisse is a bargin
