There's a very thin margin between winning and losing a game like this.

    Pardew has edged it.

Bottom line, it's a results business - it going well. <ok>

Formation porn is as much about your suggestions as to what you think the lineup should be as what you think it actually will be. The porn shall live on!

Baffles me as to why we start every game playing horrific hoof ball and then slowly get into a game of possession.

a think if HBA and cabaye were on the pitch at the same time it could have been a different start and game! baffles me why he doesnt start yet, hes our most technically gifted player and can do magic at times! never the less 3 points

Beginning to think Pardew sees him as a impact player, plus he has said before he likes to keep a winning team, therefore the two changes from the Man Utd game for today were Best for Ba and Guthrie for Tiote, like for like enforced changes.

Where are we in the league?
    6th.

Where were we predicted to be?
    Relegated.

What was the result in our last game?
    Win.

Pardew said after 20 minutes that the gameplan wasnt working and he was about to change our shape. Cabaye's injury allowed us to do this, and we played something like this:

    Krul
    Simpson Willo Colo Santon
    Guthrie Raylor
    Benny - - Jonas - - Best
    Shola

Guthrie and Raylor holding the midfield, Jonas roaming and HBA/Best inverted wingers able to cut inside and shoot (which worked as Best scored). QPR couldnt handle it, it was a tactical surprise, they didnt know who to be picking up and Jonas was absolutely everywhere, playing there really suits him. As for Ben Arfa, he was playing much higher up the pitch so defending wasnt an issue, the full backs were supported defensively by the midfield, who had time, space and plenty of covering players.

I am not sure the change in the game was completely about tactics, prior to the Cabaye injury QPR were first to every 50-50 ball, it seems that the tackle on Cabaye angered the Newcastle players out of there slumber, if you notice that even when waiting for HBA to come on Newcastle had upped their game

I disagree with Pardew's use of Ben Arfa. He keeps going on about defensive work, but you could easily have played him off Leon Best yesterday and in my opinion dominated the game from the off. But we started set up to play hoofball against two centre halfs who monstered Shola and Bestie. Shola doesn't do any work so anything Benni did would be a bonus anyway! Ferdinand and Gabbidon were loving it until Ben Arfa came on, we went to a diamond with Jonas at the top and all of a sudden we were playing football properly again and having all the possession. They wanted to stand and head it all day, they didn't want to be turned by people running in behind.

I think Pardew is a little too negative with his starting tactics at present. I understand his theory. Make it a real war by battering them direct for 60 mins, Ben Arfa comes on to rape tired legs. But what happened to our confidence to outplay sides early doors when we were dominating posession of nearly every game? It is woeful to watch too unless its broken by stunning goals like Man U. We need to get back to playing football properly, it suits our players better.

Still loving Pardews work overall though!

We were ****e the first 15-20mins yesterday, could of easily been 1 or 2 nil down. i agree with 'Warm Pouch' we should of started with Ben Arfa & Best up front and attacked front the off.....having said that, we won and kept a clean sheet. Pardew's damned if he does damned if he doesn't it seems

I think this answers part of the question, you can't have both guys up top doing bugger all closing down. But Pardew wanted the ariel threat that Shola provides (a la Man U) so he played Shola instead of HBA.

Best does graft though. Its only Shola who lollops around aimlessly. I think Benni grafts a lot more than Shola does also so I think you'd be getting more and encouraging us to play in a way that suits us and not the oppo. As I say I understand Pardews theory with the direct stuff, but anyone with eyes can see its only when we play football that we look any good. Bar the Man U game it just doesn't work for us going long. That was a very specific tactic which worked because their defenders don't deal with the aerial ball, and they don't have a holding midfielder to pick up the scraps. If you look at the QPR and Liverpool games, we were playing against teams with good aerial defenders and a holding midfielder. Both teams made very light work of our direct approach.

I would never moan too much as we are having one hell of a season, but I must admit I'm not enjoying the hoofball. Overall I'd class us a footballing side but of late we've gone long an awful lot. I thought it was due to absences but we had the personnel to play passing football on Sunday and chose to go long. I never have enjoyed watching hoofball though so I am very biased. I just don't think its how football should be played.

Agree with most of this, just that Shola for all his faults does get to a lot headers and can hold the ball up/knock on for partner better than Best (especially headers) which is why Pardew picks him.

Oh aye I just wish he wouldn't. I don't think Pardew is a long ball manager mind. I think he has just lost his way after we got a few poor results. The fact we're still getting results is probably making him think its the way forward at present. To be fair he changed it when Cabaye got injured. Now whether that was his intention or the injury forced it on him is something we'll never know. he'll say hewas going to change it anyway, I would!

I wonder if Alan Pardew recognises his own after match interviews..............he mentioned Ben Arfa changed the game. Well that isnt the first time you have said this is it Pard's..?? Maybe if we stated with the lad we can dominate from the off.

The first 20 mins before Cabaye went off were absolute horsesh*t. Terrible. Its a good job QPR couldn't score in a brothel.
