Wow. Why was it abandoned? I love how nature takes control again, with the grass forcing its way through concrete.

I think it simply wasn't needed any more: decreasing demand for coal and unfortunately for those who lived there its primary use was to house mining families. Fortunate for us all now though because it looks incredible.

    Wow, they look incredible.

As for Pripyat, same here I'd love to go. I think there are still parts of the city you can't go to without a radiation suit - crazy stuff.

Although this has already been posted, I think you'll get let off cos it's well cool. (Also, wasn't an Indiana Jones film shot there?)

<laugh> everything I've posted seems to have already been mentioned! Definitely cool though, really detailed.

Just googled it and yeah, apparently it was a film location for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Also filmed in Hertfordshire <diva>

    Can't beat Cracked.com!

Sorry, haven't read through the whole of this thread (couldn't post pictures when it was originally conceived) so if sorry if this has already been posted, but one of the coolest/weirdest buildings I've seen in real life was this, in Singapore:

Is it just me or does that picture look like it's taken from a video game?
