I don't think you are, If all you were friendly about it I'd still honestly say i don't see the transfer happening, unfortunately some of your fans (not unlike rangers and celtic) appear to be idiots which i expect from all clubs no matter their size or history.

I don't think Jelavic is as good an option as Hooper and I think Saints will bid 8-10 if needed.

Hooper isn't a gamble like other players would be. Adkins already knows what he is going to get rather than spend that money on someone else who my not turn out in Adkins model.

I think he would be worth the money considering Adkins would just pick up where he left off.

And I have no disrespect for Celtic. Always been my second team as I was at Catholic school and our school football team was called SSPP celtic and even played in proper replica CR smith shirts :)

I hope it will happen. Good player and guaranteed return IMO

Don't think we'll go for Commons, more likely to go for Driver as backup for Guly when he returns to the right wing. Lee (and Hooper if we get him) will partner Lambert up top.

Apparently Soton have offered £4m for Hooper. There is absolutely no chance he'll be going for anything like that for the following reasons:

    - he's proved since his move to the SPL that he can play at a higher level by scoring goals in Europe against Rennes, Udinese and Atletico Madrid.
    - he's 23 so his best years are ahead of him
    - going by the fees paid for English strikers, £4m is a paltry amount
    - we don't need to sell
    - it's January and no club with serious title ambitions want to sell their best players
    - whoever wins the SPL gains automatic qualification to the CL. That's worth £12m+. Why risk that for £4m?

IF Southampton want him they are going to have to pay a lot more than £4m.

I read it was £6m, but otherwise yes. absolutely. He is a vital piece of the jigsaw and we are at a lack of strikers. He is more valuable to us than 4-6 million and we have no need to sell.

Southampton may very well get promoted. Celtic may very well be playing CL football next year. That is still a big draw for a player.

It's probably a little hard to to grasp just how big the Glasgow clubs are if you've never been here. Yes there are financial constraints for both (perhaps a few more for RFC at the moment!) but they'll not have a gun held to their heads, just as we didn't in the AOC deal. The only way this will happen is if the player hands in a request and we pay well over the odds. I honestly think Jelavic would be cheaper at present.

I've already said this once! Never going to happen !!!!

If Celtic sold him you would seriously question their own ambition.

It looks like Southampton would have to pay over 7m to get the lad and why on earth would we be that stupid!

We've got a proven international striker coming in for under £1m. We've also already proven that quality can be brought much cheaper...Lambert, Chaplow, Cork anyone?

Adkins would probably have to gaurantee promotion to Cortese for spending that amount and potentially risk his job.

    Lets just wait and see.

The board at Celtic are not fools. They know a good deal when they see it. If there is someone out there who they rate can do a similar job to Hooper but only cost them a fraction of the transfer fee they can get for Hooper, they will take the money and run. They are running a business (as well as a football club).
I have my doubts quite honestly that this deal can go through as much as I would like it to. For Saints it would have to be a record signing, for Celtic it would be a grave error in judgement to let him go at this crucial time of the season. For the player a huge Gamble. However it may be that Celtic may not have a choice but to let him at least talk to Saints as it could be written in his contract, that he be allowed to talk to someone interested in a deal.

Ifs, buts and maybes. Who could we find to replace him given that we're already halfway through the Jan transfer window? What chance have we got at finding a replacement when few clubs want to sell? And I've heard nothing about any clause.

As for our Board not being fools, you're right there. This is a Board that got £1.75m for Craig Beattie so if you think you're going to get Hooper on the cheap you're in for a bit of a shock.

Correct - Hooper is the missing part of the Saints jigsaw. Proven finisher at this level, good attitude, pace which we don`t have, two good feet, strong and not bad in the air. He`d take a load off Rickie and provide a different option for Saints on the counter. If we`d converted a better proportion of the chances which we`ve created and wasted this season, we`d be way out in front in the league. The lift this signing would give the squad would be immense and kick-start the promotion push again. If it is 6M to get him, then money well invested in the context of the premier league.

Having read through the whole thread I have to agree with those doubting this deal is going to happen - at least for now. Celtic need to win the SPL and Hooper is integral to that success. If Hooper is worth £6M; they do not have to sell him now even if he wanted away; they could hold onto him to until they win the SPL and then cash in on him. For Hooper, even if he wanted to link up with Adkins, it would be better for him to wait to see if we get promoted to the EPL. If we did, then Celtic could push up the price further still because they know that Saints will have the Sky cash in the bank and Hooper could negotiate an EPL player contract rather than a Championship player contract and he has an SPL medal for his cabinet.

To summarise - both Celtic and Hooper benefit by waiting until the end of the season.

Apologies to you Celtic fans too for some of the disrespectful statements made by some of the Saints contributors - it might annoy you, but if it is any consolation - it has certainly embarrassed me and other like-minded Saints fans.
