With respect to him getting those two goal line clearances, has nobody noticed that both times he left the player he should have been marking and getting infront of? I'm not sure I'd count those instances as good defending so much as a bit lucky, unless I've read the situation wrong and Colo et al are supposed to mark everyone and do everything in the box...

And yet, we seem to be fine. Simpson is not a bad player, people are far, far too quick to write him off. He was a bargain at 500k when he came to us in the Championship - but look how far he's improved since then. If he leaves this window we are ****ed, pure and simple.

Absolutely correct. Goal line clearances are fantastic of course, but are obvious evidence of Simpson again being out of position and hiding behind our centre halfs. I'll give him credit when he can play his actual position well, as it is he's okay but hugely flawed mentally in terms of marking and decision making.

If we are serious about pushing for a European place, we need to be keeping hold of the likes of Danny Simpson, as even if not a first choice next season will be needed for cover, same for Ryan Taylor.

The best thing is to get some quick money for him, put Raylor back to right-back and play Santon at the left, until we get a new left-back.

We need to add depth, we don't want to be selling anyone!

Prefferebly someone better in though, keep him as cover.

Even keep Obertan. We need a replacement on that side, but we also need cover.

Must admit, raylor is pretty usefull in tha dept with his range of positions.

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the not606 forum so don't be too harsh on me! I've long been a reader of the board but have never really felt the need to join as someone will always voice an opinion similar to mine. The issue surrounding Danny Simpson has been the one thing that has lead to me taking the plunge.

To me the situation regarding Simpson is very similar to the one we had with Aaron Hughes. Despite what some of you may think about aspects of Simpson's play I think very few people would disagree that he is a solid premiership right back. I personally rate him very highly and like the lad. His celebration with Krul after the goal line clearance against his boyhood club was a nice moment and a show of commitment I thought. He works extremely hard for the team and in my opinion is a much better fullback than ryan taylor (who I think did great as a make-shift left back and impressed me on the right wing against Man Utd).

The comparison to Aaron Hughes comes in relation to a thread that detailed your opinions on the most under-rated Newcastle players. Aaron Hughes was mentioned by an awful lot of you, however when he was actually here I think the level of appreciation from fans was very much similar to the level that Simpson is experiencing now. Many people didn't see him as good enough for NUFC and when he left there were very few people who were really angry or disappointed about that. Hughes didn't go on to set the premiership alight and I don't necessarily think Simpson is in a place to do so either, but whist we struggled for options at the back for many years Hughes was a good, solid, reliable defender that we let go for no real fee and for no real reason.

I feel like the sale of Simpson could well result in the same kind of regret at a later date. He is a solid option even as back up if you think he isn't good enough for a regular role, and he isn't even too injury prone which is strange for a Newcastle United player! Many people are calling for a switch of Santon to right back in the long term but he's already had a few injuries in his short time here.

Anyway, bit of a long one I know but I really would like to see people being a bit more appreciative of Simpson as I think selling him would be something we might regret. Would hate to see Simpson included in a thread of under rated ex Newcastle players a few years down the line!

    Alright mate, welcome! :)

Yeah I agree that people are harsh on Simmo - I think he is a good player, not great but I'd like him to stay at the club. But, unfortunetly if he doesn't sign the contract that is put in front of him then there is not much option other than to flog him

Cheers man! Yeah the contract issue is a problem but personally I hope he's offered decent terms to stay on. Skysports seem to reckon he wants to stay here despite interest from other clubs so from my point of view I hope it gets sorted!

I hope it does too, he is a good player to have. I don't think he will be our number one right back if/when we sign a left back as I can see Santon moving to right back, but I definetly don't want him to leave.

Even playing in League One he's been head and shoulders above anyone on the pitch.

Ready for the first team though?? Maybe loan him to the Championship, or introduce him as a sub in the cup..? I don't think Tav is ready for the first team just yet (despite his motm performance on Sunday)

I think he should at least get 20 minutes in a prem match in the near future to see how he copes, he has the quality to make it.
