Funnily enough when I was growing up Middlesbrough were just a **** team in the lower leagues. Glad to say, some things are just meant to be.
The 'boro game was regarded as more of a derby game when I was a kid and was one of the first games my pa took me to see. Just see it as a sort of secondary derby now behind the Tyne / Wear derby.
I had to put up with them signing Ravanelli a couple of months after he scored the winning goal in the Champions league final for Juventus and the they was Juninho and Gazza etc etc. They were never gona progress with such a sh!te fanbase though!
Of course its a derby just not a massive one. There wil only ever be one derby for Sunderland and Newcastle fans but Boro come a distant second.
Well that's that then. Syd has spoken. For me though derby's keep you awake, put you off your food, first games to be sought on fixture realise day and for the week before, dominate your thoughts. Boro simply don't qualify in any of the above. Local game yes...Derby no.
I live near Boro and most of my mates are Boro fans. The team they primarily hate is Newcastle for some reason, and they still sing songs about us this season. I've always seen them as the left out kid that no one really likes who is begging for someone to give them some attention.
Middlesbrough is a small town in Yorkshire and before the Seventies restructure of the Counties were never considered as part of the NE more N Yorks. As for a Derby definitely not!
I don't see the game as a derby, nothing compared to the mackems game anyway, feel sorry for them as I'm sure Sunderland feel the same way!
Haven't got a clue why.....wait......no....ive got it, would it be that there are more Mag wums than Makem ones, that couldn't be the answer could it no.....as chubby would say, YA ****ING RIGHT YA NAAR
Slightly off topic but,... Where does "The North East " start geographically? Anything North of Watford is "The North " according to the beeb.
I'd consider it a derby. Where I'm from when I was a kid (Sedgefield, a long time ago) you either supported Sunderland or Boro. Virtually nobody at school supported the mags, so Boro were more the local rivals for me personally.
I was born in, and my family still live in Stockton on Tees. North of the River Tees so in County Durham not Yorkshire
Even though this makes me feel dirty and used. This. It can't compare to the real thing because it's not the real thing. Not a derby and never will be a derby. It's like saying Asti is Champagne....nearly.
