The Inbetweeners movie. One of the males in the movie very much reminded me of my very self. The other males reminded me of my rather immature, inferior and annoying friends.

The Maltese Falcon is a classic chap <ok>

Good to see you included loads of Hitchcock in your list. I restricted mine to two of his, I could have put a dozen easily ;)

I just couldn't help myself <laugh>. Love that you have Rope in your list there too, such an underrated Hitchcock and one of his very best - insane amounts of tension. It was shot in either 2 or 3 incredibly long, uncut shots too I think which pretty much makes everything from the plot to the acting and the directing to the camera work absolutely masterful.

I had to control myself too. Shadow of a Doubt and his versions of Rebecca and 39 Steps were screaming out to be included <laugh> Those three along with Rope and Saboteur make up my all time top five hitchcock films (till the wind changes direction) ;)

Rope should be a must on filmmaking courses/degrees for that reason. Technically one of the best films ever made and not at the expense of tension and acting. Shame it isn't that well known these days really.

I think what happened with Rope is that Hitchcock had this vision of a movie with no cuts but the technology at the time couldn't handle it so they had to do it in 5 minute shots. Any time the camera zooms into something black and zooms back out there is a cut. It's a very clever way of circumventing the limits of technology actually.

Yep, you're spot on. It pans past/zooms into a character's back as he walks by the camera which is when the subtle cuts are made. Very clever stuff.
