Can a player refuse to leave ?

There is a lot of chit chat about Tiote and Cabaye being certain to leave if big offers come in as Ashley would want to cash them in for a big profit. Tiote has stated several times that he is happy with us and does not like London.
So, what would happen if the big offer came in from say Chelsea and it was acceptable to Ashley - I presume that Tiote could refuse to go as he has a long contract ?
Regardless of whether he was offered a fantastic wage if he was adamant that he wanted to stay could he be forced to leave ?
Has this situation ever happened with other clubs/players ?

 

Technically he could yes, as the contract works both ways. But players like Tiote have no connection to the club (and even that didnt stop Carroll ), they wont stay if we accept an offer. If we refuse an offer I doubt they would try to force a move though.

This. It annoys me when people have a go at players for not being loyal to a club. He has no connection to the club whatsoever, in the same way you wouldn't if you went to play for some African team.

I suppose in theory they can, but in practice you'll struggle to name one in recent times. Players expect commitment from the club in the same way a club demands commitment from a player. Now if a club has an unhappy player who is not playing to his best because he wants to leave, they tend to accept the situation and move them on. But equally a player wants to be wanted. If a club decides to take the cash on offer, the player views that as the club no longer wanting him and breaking the trust between them. They move on.

Plenty of players have expressed a desire to not live in a certain place, but still ended up going. Crouchie said before his Stoke move that he wanted to stay in London. Wehn there were no London clubs of significant standing in for him, he went where his career would benefit most.

The only thing for me which will decide whether Tiote goes anywhere, is what bids are made. Tiote will not effect it greatly because the options will be stellar and he'll want to go if the club have told him they want to sell. If we get into silly season of 25m plus then I think we'd be forced to sell. If that happens and we accept a bid, then he'll probably get the hump anyway, his agent will be in his ear as his eyes circle his cut from a transfer, Tiote will be swayed by doubling his wages, and things will just spiral. I want to keep him but I think we have to be realistic about what is going to happen if people start pushing bids under our noses.

Realistically no, a player cannot be forced to leave a club just because the club has accepted an offer. The player has a legal contract with the club and is perfectly entitled to stay. However, putting yourself in their position ... if you realised that the club wanted the money more than your services wouldn't you feel uncomfortable about staying?

Personally I can understand why most players under those circumstances move on. One team wants them whilst the one they are with would rather have some money. Your ego will be telling you to go where you are wanted. Especially if as stated by others the player has no tie to the club.

Other factors will apply and may change the dynamic but in principal that is my take on this.

 

Yes. The club and player signed into a legally binding contract. Therefore, in this case, NUFC have committed to paying Tiote X amount per week for 5.5 years, regardless of whether the club accept bids from other clubs. If the player was determined bot to go there's nothing the club could do.

Tevez for example could refuse to leave Man City, pick up his £175,000 per week or whatever he earns and City couldn't do a thing about it. If that did happen and they wanted rid they'd have to pay up the value of the rest of his contract.

 

At the end of the day, if a player gets told by Ashley and Llambias that they have accepted a bid and they want them to leave then they will leave 99% of the time. No doubt they are happy here, but wouldn't turn down Man Utd or Chelsea if they came in for them.

 

On another topic, should we offer Ba another contract? He has only got 2 years after this one. Don't know why he only got a 3 year deal, but think we should sign him up for an extra few years like

Think that it depends ... if the player really doesn't want to leave he can say that he isn't satisfied with the wages being offered etc even if both clubs have struck a deal. But if a player is being forced out like Tevez, it's in his best interest to look for a transfer ... or else he could **** up his career .

 

Tbh, I doubt that, but if true then Bobby was probably right to do so, because he was the man! haha
